545 | Where God the Father symbolized by fire | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 234984
Hi, fiilus... Welcome to the forum! I don't think you mean "symbolized" as much as manifested -- there is quite a difference. God is manifested with fire in such passages as Genesis 15:17; Exodus 3:2-4; 13:21; 19:18; Judges 13:20; 1 Kings 18:24; etc. In Him, Doc |

Hi, Crys... Perhaps, as Chuck suggested, it is time to find a church that holds the greatest authority on the Word of God rather than human experience. How odd to have a church that believes in spiritual gifts but shrinks at teaching the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27). This renders everything -- the ecstatic practices, the interpretation, the meaning of edification, even the meaning of church -- entirely subjective. Imagine how helpful it would be if someone had the gift of diligent study of Scripture, the whole Scripture? Of course, in the atmosphere you describe, that kind of person would probably find it necessary to part company even before they were asked to leave. While you are looking for a real church, reading "Nine Marks of a Healthy Church" by Mark Dever would be helpful. God gave us minds, and it His intention that we use them, allowing them to be transformed by the Word (Romans 12:2; 2 Peter 3:18; etc.) in knowledge. I suggest that you do more thinking (Scripture based doctrine) and less feeling (self focused, emotionalism). The human heart is a greater liar than is Satan (Jeremiah 17:9). Think, then feel... but always, always, always think first! Your feelings of something being amiss in this group of people was given rise by your recognizing how they are missing the mark. God bless you as you look for a congregation that loves God more than they love themselves. In Him, Doc |

Hi, Patricia... Welcome to the forum! Those questions cover a lot of ground. We do teach this in my church; other churches do as well. Richard Fuller (1804-1876) wrote, "On every page of the Bible I behold nothing but the cross, and its amazing retinue of suffering and glory. For me, patriarch and prophet and apostle all utter one voice, all point to Calvary, and cry, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world! As a minister, as a sinner, I have no theme, no hope, but Christ Jesus and Him crucified. On Him and Him alone, on the redundant merit of His atonement, my soul leans with a recumbency, a confidence, a delight unspeakable and full of glory." 555 | Why are walls needed in Heaven? | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 235431
Dear Alfalpha, I have been thinking about your question. In fact, listening to a talk, by the archaeologist Dr. Joel Drinkard, on excavations of gate complexes in Jordan, particularly brought your question to mind. I think that you are talking about the New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:10-27) rather than heaven. We certainly understand that the reality of the new Jerusalem will be far different than anything we humans have experienced. Nonetheless, the notion of walls certainly imply security; something that separates those who are gathered together as a people from that which is outside. The gates of a city were the places from which access was controlled; places of commerce, judgment, and fellowship. They were the places where the elders gathered, and even places of worship. Would not the ancient human experience of cities have good analogies with how the "city foursquare" the City of God is described? In Him, Doc |

556 | Is believing in ransubstantiation a sin? | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 235436
Hi, S. Young... Welcome to the forum! You received a very odd answer! Of course, the percentage of people that believe a thing -- or fail to believe a thing -- does not have any bearing on if it is sinful to believe it or not! :-) Search the Scriptures to work out what God has said (1 John 4:5-6). The fact that you came to this forum demonstrates that you have a sense that the answer to your question is in the Word of God. The fact that you asked it shows your concern to be obedient to the Lord. That is very commendable! There are three common views on the question: transubstantiation, consubstantiation, and memorialism. Take some time to familiarize yourself with them, then search the Word, asking the Lord to convict you concerning the truth; then hold to that which is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21). We will be praying for you as you seek out what God Himself has revealed. In Him, Doc |

557 | what is your soul | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 235444
Hi, God's Girl... Welcome to the forum! That's a good question. Some of what we see in the Scripture might be open to interpretation. I have seen some good arguments that human beings can be divided into three components (this is called a trichotomy): body, soul, and spirit. Others argue that humans are composed of two parts (this is called a dichotomy): body and spirit (cf Psalm 42:6; Matthew 20:28). Some passages seem to set spirit and soul as differing components (cf Hebrews 4:12; 1 Thessalonians 5:22). For completeness sake there are some people -- sorry, I don't have the percentages! -- who deny that man has any components at all (this position is called modalism) -- but I don't think that Scripture supports this perspective at all. The trichotomy view is certainly in keeping with Greek thinking. Nonetheless, there appears to be a distinction in Hebrew, as well. Consequently, we should not be surprised to see some of these perspectives coloring the language of Scripture based on the cultural/historical context of the peoples to whom the particular writings were addressed. To make a quicker answer to your question: the soul could simply be life -- which is what the Hebrew implies. On the other hand, the soul might well be the seat of the emotions and thought. Of course, like any effort to divide and categorize, I think it is important to use caution. Even with introspection we cannot distinguish where our bodies end and our minds begin. Perhaps that is even the point of Hebrews 4:12 (see post #196995) -- what can cut so precisely as to divide soul from spirit? Nothing but the Word! In Him, Doc |

558 | Prayer | Bible general Archive 4 | DocTrinsograce | 235465
Dear Eliza, I hope you understand that if we think of God as "changing His mind" in the way humans do, we are imagining a man-made god that has nothing to do with the self-revealing God of Scripture! "God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?" (Numbers 23:19) So be very careful about taking a pile of verses and trying to fit God into human like characteristics. That would place you under the condemnation of idolaters: "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man" (Romans 1:22-23a). As time unfolds God is never taken by surprise, He never switches to a "plan B," He never sways from His eternal purpose, nothing impedes His intentions. (cf Isaiah 46:9-11) Instead, in the fullness of all that Scripture says about Him, see the passages where human-like language is used, for the purpose with which it was used: that we might understand the ineffable. See that He built into every event the process, the purpose, the outcome, the results for His glory (Psalm 33:11; Isaiah 14:24; Acts 2:23; Ephesians 1:11-12). In order to insure the soundness of doctrine and fully express those things confessed by all of true Christendom, we must qualify and explain our answers, lest we impose on or neglect all that God has said (Jeremiah 23:25-32; Matthew 4:4). (See also post #235398.) In Him, Doc |

Hi, Joy... Welcome to the forum! The verse that came immediately to mind is one that has a mismatched antecedent. Of course, to the average KJV reader of old, there wouldn't have been a problem. It just sounds humorous to modern ears: "And he spake to his sons, saying, 'Saddle me the ass.' And they saddled him." (1 Kings 13:27 KJV) Perhaps, though, the email you received was referring to Genesis 49:14. In Him, Doc |
