401 | wandering eyes | Gen 1:1 | jlhetrick | 180984
Hello sour, It's not that people are attacking you, but rather your incoherent attempt to rationalize the irrational, seriously. If and when you do pick up a bible I recommend reading Romans chapter 1 verses 18-32. It describes your path perfectly I'm affraid. I have known several people who have chosen not to open and read the bible. A few of them have been honest enought to acknowledge that they will not because they know something in their life is sinful and wrong such as, say......homosexuality??? You gave your reason for regisering on the forum but might I suggest that there was and is something much bigger behind it. Perhaps, instead of "turning other's backs on God", the empty darkness that you define as "happiness" may have light exploded into it?? With that said, let me suggest to you that philosophical daydreaming, no matter how incoherently it is presented, is not what Lockman provides this Forum for. Please read the Terms of Use and About the Forum sections and adhere to those terms that you agreed to when registering. We will all appreciate and respect you for that. Sincerely, Jeff |

Hello cuddle, Welcome to the Forum my friend. So your new to the "forum deal"? No problem. Allow me to give a few pointers that will apply here at SBF. 1. If you feel any offense regarding what someone has posted to you, YOU should re-read their post carefully. Remember a lot is missing in the communication process when we only have the words on screen. I can assure you that Doc would not have responded at all to your post without having first read it carefully and with sufficient consideration. 2. This is a forum for bible study. If you post something, expect a response. Don't expect that every response will agree with you. 3. Personal opinion and experience are considered of little value without the correlating support/confirmation of Scripture. Well, I said I would give a few pointers so I will stop there. The best advise might be to spend more time reading than posting in the beginning. This adds to a better appreciation of the regular posters that you will deal mostly with (the strengths and weakness of each). I'm glad for the affection you show for the local church. Praise God for that and may you contribute to it's spiritual growth. know too that it is that same love and affection for the Church that promotes criticism of the abominations we are seeing today in the church. in the love of Christ, Jeff PS. You should reconsider wanting to block Doc from posting to you. I'm speaking from experience after having put my own above advise to practice on this forum. You will learn from Doc a lot more often than you will be offended. |

403 | how do you deal with seeing demons | Bible general Archive 3 | jlhetrick | 180715
Hello anto, It's interesting that you would ask such a question and then reject sound advise. God does give gifts my friend, and one of those gifts is the mirical of modern medicine. Very specifically, there are medications that can help you with both your hallucinations as well as your apparent delusional thinking. My recommendation was not meant as an insult. It was a very serious recommendation and sound advise. Are you able to show in scripture where "seeing demons" is a gift from God. As a matter of fact, can you mention a single example in the bible where any man "saw a demon". Further still, can you give a single example where our Lord Jesus christ, in the flesh, "saw a demon". I would save you some time in telling you not to bother looking because you will not find it. but on the other hand my friend, the time searching will expose you to much needed time in the Scriptures. It's important that we don't attempt to mystify the things of God to include His word to us. I hope you will consider my words seriously, Jeff PS. I am a Christian by the grace of God. |

10-4 Edwin, I agree that there is not further need for discussion on the topic here. Just for the record, I really don't stand firmly on either side, though I do lean heavily in one direction. I try never to claim views or positions any more unless I can establish those with Scripture. Thank you for accepting my apology brother, Jeff |

406 | What happens immediatly after you die? | 2 Corinthians | jlhetrick | 180568
Hello ebrain, Sorry if I offended you, but I won't take responsibility for saying what I did not say. My friend, I believe the insult is from you and being offended is mine to claim. There is nothing in my post that should have been misinterpreted as my having said that you intentionally posted something that you knew to be false. But in the case that you are unable or unwilling to consider my words objectively, I feel obliged to make myself clear. I wrote: "I am confident that you are aware of the biblical evidence that weakens, if not totally defeats, your teaching here." I must retract my entire statement; not because it was what you interpreted it to be, but becuase you have now convinced me that you are not aware of the biblical evidence that weakens, if not totally defeats, your teaching regarding soul sleep. Had you been truly interested in considering my post and it's intent, you would have concluded that I do not take a position that calls yours wrong and another thought right. My point was that this issue has been discussed and debated for a long, long, long time. The conclusions that I have read by most teachers (who I respect and trust) is that the bible simply does not clearly defend either position. With this said, either side can make a very long-winded, logical argument and use Scripture to support their argument (sort of how you did in your 3 parts). My response to you, was to point out that while you are making the argument, there is another view that contradicts you and does so with equal enthusiasm and referencing of Scripture. My fault was in assuming you knew this. My intention was not to offend and certainly not to insinuate or out-right say that you were guilty of false teaching. Please forgive me for not being clear about that the first time. ebrain, I have followed your posts for some time on this Forum. I have agreed with much of what you have to say. I have also disagreed with some of your teaching and even confused by a few things you have posted. I willing to believe that at least one other can say the same thing about my own posts (if not many more). I am long past the place in my life where I believe I have all the answers. I am also long past the point (praise God) where I simply take what others have to say at face-value. Let me end by saying; our goal here on the Forum should always be to teach sound doctrine. On issues such as this one, our responsibility is to demonstrate to the best of our ability what the Scriptures say on the topic. I recommend reading Charles Ryrie. He is one of those I referred to that I respect and trust. I do not agree with every position he takes. I do trust him because where issues are controversial he explains both or all sides of the argument. That's responsibility. (NOTE: I am not saying that C. Ryrie takes either position on the topic of "soul sleep" as I have never read and have no idea what he does or does not believe on the topic. My reference to Mr. Ryrie was regarding his approach to teaching). ebrain, I pray that we do not allow an issue so unessential to our salvation to devide us. God bless, Jeff |

407 | What happens immediatly after you die? | 2 Corinthians | jlhetrick | 180510
Hello ebrain, I didn't see the need to respond in depth to parts I, II, and III; but allow me to make a short response here. I don't desire to get into a long, drawn out debate on such a controversial issue. Furthermore, I am confident that you are aware of the biblical evidence that weakens, if not totally defeats, your teaching here. So, my short response here is meant for the benefit of other readers who may not know better. You wrote: "As the events described at 1 Thes 4:13-18, have not as yet taken place, then those believers who have gone to be with Jesus, cannot possibly have bodies, and therfore will not be able to see, hear, touch, taste, talk, and so on,,, be able to make contact with others, and especially to be able to interact with his Maker." I believe your first "assumption" here is an obvious one. Assuming that those who are "asleep in Christ" (in other words christians who have died) have not yet their glorified bodies (I'm not arguing that point); you move on to draw the conclusion that they can neither "see, hear, touch, taste, talk, and so on...be able to make contact with others, and ESPECIALLY TO BE ABLE TO INTERACT WITH HIS MAKER." (emphasis, CAPS., added). Your preface briefly illustrates the need for our Lord to have come in the flesh. But I don't understand how you translate that into the dead in Christ not being able to see, hear, touch, etc. Surely you are not saying that Christ, before His incarnation, was unable to see, talk, or interact with God the Father; are you? In short, I believe that it is fair to say that your teaching, that the dead in Christ (or those who sleep in Christ) are comatose, is a matter of your own opinion and not something you have adequately supported with Scripture (in either part). That is fair right? You wrote: "As the Judgement seat of Christ is also still future, then if those "who sleep in Jesus" are not really asleep at all, then some of them will have waited almost 2000 years to be Judged." So! You are asserting what? That this would be unfair. Furthermore, your own argument of "soul sleep" doesn't change this. If soul sleep is as you say it is, the event known as the judgement seat of Christ is still in the future. So those you speak of have still waited almost 2000 years, and may wait another 2000. Of course your theory does give them some relief as they have slept and have no kowledge of the 2000 years passing. Pretty convenient for those who have died in their sins. I hope you can see how your teaching such a thing (as old as the teaching may be) may be seen as irresponsbile in the light of your not being able to support it with Scritpture. It's another one of those things, ebrain, that has enough mystery to it that leaves us unable to declare it either way definatively, with the support of Scripture. What do we do with that? God bless, Jeff |

408 | Stephen performed miracles too? | Acts 6:8 | jlhetrick | 180495
Absolutely, Praise God that we have the written (and digital) words of Spurgeon and others to still encourage us and teach us long after their passing. Another more recent, great expositor is the late J. Vernon McGee. Though gone to be with the Lord, about twenty years ago I believe, He continues to be heard (by radio) and read. Thought I would mention him because I just finished his most recent notes (on Luke) mailed to me through his Through the Bible ministry. "Poetry set to music" is a good way to describe Spurgeons preaching. Perhaps that's why I have found myself reading through his sermons late into the night. Jeff |

409 | Stephen performed miracles too? | Acts 6:8 | jlhetrick | 180492
"We cannot expect to deliver much of the teaching of Holy Scripture by picking out verse by verse, and holding these up at random. The process resembles that of showing a house by exhibiting separate bricks. It would be an astounding absurdity if our friends used our private letters in this fashion, and interpreted them by short sentences disconnected and taken away from the context. Such expositors would make us out to say in every letter all we ever thought of, and a great many things besides far enough from our minds; while the real intent of our epistles would probably escape attention. (Charles Spurgeon) God Bless, Jeff |

Hello Azure, No need to feel ashamed. You are working harder tham many in your efforts to hear from God through His word. He is faithful and will honor that. As for Mr. Lewis I doubt he would care. His words were not inspired anyway. Besides. You made it clear to the forum that your translation may be inaccurate. Don't know that it could be done more responsibly than that. Keep up the good work. I'm sure I'm not the only one who is inspired by your efforts. God Bless, Jeff |

411 | Genesis 3:16-17 | NT general Archive 1 | jlhetrick | 180443
Hello Azure, I can't comment on this particular C.S. Lewis book as I have never read it. What I will say regarding your translation to English is this. The issue of a husband being the head is not an idea that is effected by a man's "claiming" it; whether or not he is living up to Eph. 24:5. Rather, it is a standard ordained by God. Unfortunately, there are women who refuse to submit to God's standard based on the argument that the husband isn't living up to his responsibilities. It's just as unfortunate that so many husbands are not living up to God's standards while all the while claiming Ephesians 5:24 while failing to read and adhere to the very next verse. End the end though, each one (the husband and the wife) is responsible for obeying God because He's God, not based on how closely the other is following the command. Hope this helps, Jeff PS. I just want you to know how much I admire and respect you. First because you have proven (in my opinion) to be one who seriously considers the word of God in an honest way. Second, because you have a command of at least two languages:) And I might add that your use of the English language is better than many who claim it as their first language. |

412 | Whats a womens place in the Church? | 1 Tim 2:12 | jlhetrick | 180436
Hello Azure, No I can't explain the reference to "angels" in the passage. I have heard a variety of things said about it but can't say that I understand it. I have looked into it before, but still can't offer a sound explanation. I will offer some commentary from one of my favorite commentators. "She ought to have power on her head, because of the angels. Power, that is, a veil, the token, not of her having the power or superiority, but being under the power of her husband, subjected to him, and inferior to the other sex. Rebekah, when she met Isaac, and was delivering herself into his possession, put on her veil, in token of her subjection, Gen 24:65. Thus would the apostle have the women appear In Christian assemblies, even though they spoke there by inspiration, because of the angels, that is, say some, because of the evil angels. The woman was first in the transgression, being deceived by the devil (1 Tim 2:14), which increased her subjection to man, Gen 3:16. Now, believe evil angels will be sure to mix in all Christian assemblies, therefore should women wear the token of their shamefacedness and subjection, which in that age and country, was a veil. Others say because of the good angels. Jews and Christians have had an opinion that these ministering spirits are many of them present in their assemblies. Their presence should restrain Christians from all indecencies in the worship of God. Note, We should learn from all to behave in the public assemblies of divine worship so as to express a reverence for God, and a content and satisfaction with that rank in which he has placed us." (from Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible: New Modern Edition, Electronic Database. Copyright © 1991 by Hendrickson Publishers, Inc.) I have also heard some who say that the reference to angels would be better translated "messangers" instead of angels and perhaps referring to visiting leaders or others who's tasks were to report back on the goings on they witnessed in the congregations. Can't be more specific than that as my memory fails me. You might do a search on the verse in the search window and find more said about it. There are at least a few on the Forum that are very knowledgeable regarding the orignial languages and the interpretation and tranlation processes. Hope this helps and God bless, Jeff |

Azure, I believe that the point you are apparently trying to make is a worthy one to consider. Keeping within the context of this thread, allow me to offer some input. Consider the following. The first thing that must be considered regarding your question to Steve is, what exactly does it mean that Adam was "created in God's image"? While you are contemplating that, consider the consequences resulting from that creation's (Adam's) fall. Seth was begotten in Adam's image. What was that image? I suggest, the image of corrupt man. Adam's nature of sin that was imputed to Seth and all of humankind. And so the work of the Holy Spirit in those of us that are saved, is to renew us, creating within us once again the image of Christ. 1 Cor 15:46-49 46 But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual. 47 The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. 48 As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. ESV Col 3:9-10 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. ESV Again, in keeping with the thread context here also consider these verses. It seems like there is a lot said on the subject with very little reference to Scripture. 1 Cor 11:7-10 7 For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. 9 Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. ESV Hope this helps contribute to the discussion. God bless, Jeff |

Hello again 2Tim. It appears that you take Eph. 4:11-16 to heart. Glad my post was helpful. There was a time when I had begun to feel rather overwhelmed as I was exposed to so many different teachings and "teachers". Turns out though that it was actually a blessing. Some of the things I was hearing forced me deeper into the word of God. Sounds like the same is true for you. Praise God. You wrote: "I would also add that 1 Tim. warns against gnostic teachings.Women were prominent in Gnosticism and no doubt this was a temporary injunction to save the church from the very breath of suspicion" No doubt?? Careful! There is plenty of doubt and in fact, an issue that has been debated longer than the both of us have been alive. There is certainly doubt so be careful not to allow your speculations to be declared as fact or truth. Also be careful not to discount the literal by assigning an unmentioned or unimplied cause to it. People do it all the time and explain away things they don't like or understand by saying it has a "spiritual", "symbolic", or "culturally specific meaning. This is true of much in the Bible, however, the context will support it and it will be clearly demonstrated in most cases to the serious student. blessings, Jeff |
