Dear parpar, Not going in depth regarding the rest of your posts on this particular thread… Can I point out that in part, it may be that your understanding of justified may be somewhat off the beaten path, so to speak. I don’t think God justifies because we have done the right thing in accepting his offer of salvation, but rather by imputing the obedience and satisfaction of Jesus Christ unto us. And this not by anything we do, because it requires faith which is a gift from God to begin with. Romans 4:5-8: 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. 6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, 7 saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. Ephesians 2:7-9: 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. In faith lies the justification. Romans 5:1,2: 1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Stand in His grace, WOS |

Dear parpar, I apologize if I wasn’t clear with the intent of my post. It was in response to your statement concerning your understanding of how a sinner is justified and the importance you appeared to place on the sinner and their acceptance of salvation and it being simply considered the right thing to do. If the implication of your understanding was that faith was the catalyst or instrument, I missed it. Thus the reason I responded as I did. I’m kind of a say what you mean and mean what you say type of guy… I take much at face value especially what I read. I tend not to go looking for hidden or obscure implications unless I am prompted to do so, again, probably me, not reading into your understanding. If your understanding is such that it is nothing we do in justification and that it is wholly on God’s account through our faith in Christ, then I have no disagreement with you on that point, you just didn’t stated it in that manner and I still pick up even in your latest response that you lean somewhat heavily on the human effort. God’s call is effectual parpar, and when He calls us, we respond. So I’m not sure why you seem to emphasize “our acceptance” so much. Ezekiel 36:26,27: 26 And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. So with that, back to our point of justification as being God’s work and not ours… Romans 3:21-26: 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Ephesians 1:6,7: 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. 7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; I scanned over the content of the link you sent and it appeared to indicate the same, that faith is the instrument but it also points out that it is accompanied with the other saving graces and is not a dead faith. Again attributed to God through Christ and not dependant on anything we think we can or cannot do. It’s all according to the mercy of God. Titus 3:4-8: 4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. 8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. I tend to think that there was never a contradiction between Paul and James and that it is really not that difficult to comprehend. The problem is in the approach men take when reading and comparing the two. We fail often, I think, to take into consideration the whole counsel of God’s Word and therefore see things only in part as we read them. We must learn to keep His Word in the constant perspective of 2 Timothy 3:16. The small word “all” is actually a pretty big word in meaning and it is indicative of the fact that we must take it “all” into consideration when we reflect upon God’s glory as well as our salvation and living in His grace. Stand in His grace, WOS |

Lead pipe, You claim: "Faith comes from evidence, anyone who trusts their eternal destiny on something without evidence is never truly sure." My friend, you don't come close to God's definition of faith. Read Hebrews 11:1,2. 1Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. 2This is what the ancients were commended for. That's what faith is, there is no "evidence". Faith does not come from evidence, it comes from hearing God's word. Romans 10:17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Repost ID# 160873: Dear hetfield, I’ll offer my opinion if you’ll hear it: Our Bible, both Old and New Testaments are the inspired word of God. I’ve seen a definition of biblical inspiration that states it is “the Work of the Holy Spirit by which, without setting aside their personalities and literary or human faculties, God so guided the authors of Scripture as to enable them to write exactly the words which convey His truth to men, and in doing so preserved their judgments from error in the original manuscripts.” Through (fallible) human authors, God manifested the infallible and errorless writings, which convey His messages. If you admit that the New Testament is not the inspired word of God, you must admit then, that is simply the work of fallible humans. If that is the case, how can you further attest to its accuracy and usefulness and its reliability. Throughout the ages men have proven to be unreliable and to history’s account, well history, or our perception of it, depends on who we are and who’s account we read. Example: George Washington was a great hero to the Revolutionary Army of the colonial United States. To England, he was a traitor. His character is depicted differently depending on whose version you read. The same can be said of Benedict Arnold. He was a national hero in one view, a treasonous rebel in another. So to put your trust in the historicity of the New Testament while it was composed and written by uninspired men is dangerous to say the least. How do you know for sure that it is the undeniable truth? If written by uninspired men and therefore not the word of God, then you never really can. Can you? History is infested with fallacy. The New Testament is more than just simply some historical document. It is part of God’s revelation to man. We damage so severely the word of God, our Bible, when we think we can play God and pick and choose what Scripture is inspired and which is not. In doing so, quite quickly, the rest of the Bible begins to unravel. Only God has the authority to decide what is inspired and what is not. Scripture attests to the fact that all of it is inspired, as has been pointed out by numerous people throughout this thread. You can claim this is circular reasoning but that is God’s reasoning. He determined to inspire the men He did to record His word. If God is truth: (John 3:33, Romans 3:4) then you must admit that what is breathed out by God must also be true and infallible. The Holy Spirit is the inspiration behind the Prophets and Apostles. They spoke the truth predicated on that inspiration, which was then recorded for our benefit and secured by God Himself through His Holy Spirit, to ensure that was recorded, remained unadulterated by the “fallible” human authors. Now the Bible cannot save you, that is for sure. But it can direct your ways to discover the One who can, which you attest to already knowing. You seem to put your faith in Christ and strongly and consistently state that, but you diminish the authority of the Word that pointed you in His direction. As you stated: “I can and do believe in Jesus because of the bible.” If your faith is in Christ and your salvation is true, it is because the Holy Spirit, a work of God has made it so. The same Holy Spirit that so divinely inspired the written Word of God in which you question. Just some thoughts. WOS |

Inspired in this sense, is being under the influence of. Being guided by. If a person inspires you to do something, you still remain in full control, functioning upon your on will. The Holy Spirit of God is an altogether different entity. To be guided and led by God and to simply be inspired by another person to perform an act are not even comparable. Do you think they are? First of all, you cannot keep claiming the New Testament is accurate and reliable and then turn around and not accept what it says. It describes what faith is. You do not accept that definition but yet you still claim it is reliable and accurate. You see how when you start picking and choosing, it begins to unravel. So now, only some of it is accurate and reliable? There is power in God’s word my friend. More power than any book written by any other could ever muster. So if I had a choice between reading God’s inspired revelation to man or those other titles you mention, I choose the Bible. Jesus claimed He is the Way, the Truth, the resurrection and the life. We know Him to be the Son of God, our Savior and Lord. He claims that He is the only way, so whatever other religions claim is false. I have faith in my Lord that what he spoke was true. Therefore I also have faith, so to speak, that all other claims of faith are false and not worthy of attention. You cannot claim faith across the board or think that everyone has an entitlement to their own faith in whatever they believe. You establish your faith in Christ and holdfast that He is true. You know false claims of faith are just that. Why would you even attempt to use an argument of that nature? WOS |

But I do see evidence although I do not look for it. I have the eyewitness accounts of the Gospel and the writings of men guided by the Holy Spirit. I don’t feel you are trying to avoid something you don’t like in the Bible, I think you have issues with whether or not it is the word of God and what that actually means. I’m okay with that and trust that if you are truly seeking the truth, God will reveal it in His own time to you. To me, it’s the Word of God simply because He authored it in the sense that He made the Divine Inspiration possible for the men to pen what they did. God chose to reveal to us what He deemed necessary through the strokes of the pens of ordinary men. He’s a magnificent God, capable of more than we could ever imagine. WOS |

Matthew Henry states it rather well: In general, he tells them that marriage, by Christ's command, is for life; and therefore those who are married must not think of separation. The wife must not depart from the husband (1Co 7:10), nor the husband put away his wife, 1Co 7:11. This I command, says the apostle; yet not I, but the Lord. Not that he commanded any thing of his own head, or upon his own authority. Whatever he commanded was the Lord's command, dictated by his Spirit and enjoined by his authority. But his meaning is that the Lord himself, with his own mouth, had forbidden such separations, Mat 5:32; Mat 19:9; Mar 10:11; Luk 16:18. He brings the general advice home to the case of such as had an unbelieving mate (1Co 7:12): But to the rest speak I, not the Lord; that is, the Lord had not so expressly spoken to this case as to the former divorce. It does not mean that the apostle spoke without authority from the Lord, or decided this case by his own wisdom, without the inspiration of the Holy Ghost. He closes this subject with a declaration to the contrary (1Co 7:40), I think also that I have the Spirit of God. I could never put it better than that right there. Have you ever attempted to find that which supports the Bible as being the Word of God rather than looking for that which would disprove it? I think your search would be more profitable in every way if you attempted to see proofs rather than that which disproves it. Many, many men have been trying for many years to approach his as you seem to be and haven’t been successful. Ah, another proof that the Word of God can stand the test of time and the test of men. Simple uninspired words penned by men couldn’t do that. Do you think? WOS |

You wrote: “You are more sure that Paul is speaking from the spirit than he is.” Paul was pretty confident: 1Co 14:37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. Easton’s Bible Dictionary Inspiration That extraordinary or supernatural divine influence vouchsafed to those who wrote the Holy Scriptures, rendering their writings infallible. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God” (R.V., “Every scripture inspired of God”), 2Ti_3:16. This is true of all the “sacred writings,” not in the sense of their being works of genius or of supernatural insight, but as “theopneustic,” i.e., “breathed into by God” in such a sense that the writers were supernaturally guided to express exactly what God intended them to express as a revelation of his mind and will. The testimony of the sacred writers themselves abundantly demonstrates this truth; and if they are infallible as teachers of doctrine, then the doctrine of plenary inspiration must be accepted. There are no errors in the Bible as it came from God none have been proved to exist. Difficulties and phenomena we cannot explain are not errors. All these books of the Old and New Testaments are inspired. We do not say that they contain, but that they are, the Word of God. The gift of inspiration rendered the writers the organs of God, for the infallible communication of his mind and will, in the very manner and words in which it was originally given. As to the nature of inspiration we have no information. This only we know, it rendered the writers infallible. They were all equally inspired, and are all equally infallible. The inspiration of the sacred writers did not change their characters. They retained all their individual peculiarities as thinkers or writers. (See BIBLE; WORD OF GOD.) Word of God (Heb_4:12, etc.). The Bible so called because the writers of its several books were God's organs in communicating his will to men. It is his “word,” because he speaks to us in its sacred pages. Whatever the inspired writers here declare to be true and binding upon us, God declares to be true and binding. This word is infallible, because written under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and therefore free from all error of fact or doctrine or precept. (See INSPIRATION, BIBLE.) All saving knowledge is obtained from the word of God. In the case of adults it is an indispensable means of salvation, and is efficacious thereunto by the gracious influence of the Holy Spirit (Joh_17:17; 2Ti_3:15, 2Ti_3:16; 1Pe_1:23). WOS |

Lead Pipe, Have you actually read this article? It puts to rest any claims that you and hetfeild have made that the New Testament is not the Word of God. This totally shoots down your reasoning, and in no way supports your stance. Read the Scripture it notes as you read the article. Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. According to your position, this reference would be irrelevant because you claim the New Testament is not the Word of God. 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Study what? According to you, this would be referencing the Old Testament. Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Read further in Acts 17. This Article quotes Acts 17:11 that they searched the Scriptures daily. Reading further in v13 Paul is preaching the word of God. But yet even further in v19 what Paul is preaching is referred to as a new Doctrine. So what was new? Was it that the Old Testament was new to these Greeks or was Paul preaching the word of God beyond what the Old Testament taught? 13But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people. 19And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is? Quotes from this article: 1. “God expects every individual to put to the test various doctrines and beliefs, and then to reach only such conclusions as are warranted by adequate evidence. Rather, all people are obligated to rely upon the properly studied written directives of God (2 Timothy 2:15; John 12:48; 2 Peter 3:16)” Wait a minute, the article quotes New Testament verses as written directives of God. But you say they are not. So tell me Lead Pipe, are they or are they not “written directives of God”? 2. “The Bible insists that evidence is abundantly available for those who will engage in unprejudiced, rational inquiry.” You’ll notice in my post to hetfield, I made the same claim. Our evidence, as this article points out, is the Gospel and New Testament. These are the things that we cannot see and must rely on their accurate witness. 3. “we can know that the Bible is the verbally inspired Word of God, and intended to be comprehended in much the same way that any written human communication is to be understood;” The article you use to support the claim that the New Testament is not the Word of God very definitely points out that in fact, we can know it is the Word of God. So your stance is now what? That only the Old Testament is being referenced in this article? 4. “By abandoning the Bible as a literal, inerrant, infallible standard by which all human behavior is to be measured, the scientist has effectively rendered biblical religion, biblical faith, and New Testament Christianity sterile…” The Bible can only be infallible if it is the inspired Word of God. You are part of those making New Testament Christianity sterile when you abandon it as inerrant and infallible and you do just that when you claim it was simply written by men and not God. All men our fallible. Only God is not. So you see, your argument that the New Testament is not the inspired Word of God has no substance. It’s a weak argument at most and easily refuted. You disproved your claim yourself with this article. Thank you for the article. I found it very informative. WOS |

The following are some excerpts from an article by Michael Bremmer. Below it is the web address where you can read it in its entirety. There are some other articles there that you may find interesting. “Inspiration is plenary, meaning the whole Bible is inspired.” “Inspired is the Greek word theopneustos and means "God-breathed." When we say that Scripture is inspired by God we mean the same thing as the apostle Paul, that Scripture is God-breathed. At onetime, this definition was adequate for defining the doctrine of inspiration, but the constant attacks on this doctrine have made it necessary to particularize the definition of inspiration.” “Some insist that not everything in the Bible is Scripture, but only what is inspired can rightly be called Scripture. Not surprisingly, they decide what is inspired and what is not. To illustrate the problem, a person can say that he believes Scripture is inspired by God, yet does not believe that the events in Genesis 1-3 are actually historical events.” “Obviously, the word "Scripture" does not have the same meaning with all, therefore, it is important in any discussion on inspiration that all do have the same understanding of what Scripture means. Those who hold to Biblical view of inspiration agree that the word "Scripture" refers to the whole Bible, all sixty-six books. From Genesis to Revelation, all Scripture is God-breathed. The Scriptures are verbally inspired. Verbal inspiration means every word of Scripture is exactly the words that God meant. This view is supported by both Jesus statements on the subject, and by His use of Scripture. Although the Scriptures teach verbal inspiration, they do not teach the idea of mechanical dictation. The mechanical dictation theory of inspiration teaches that God used the writers of Scripture as robots, only writing as God dictates, and their personality was not a factor in the Scripture's composition. The Scripture, however, teaches the Divine-human authorship. Every word divine; and every stroke of the pen human. The original Scriptures are without error, "Thy word is Truth" (Jn. 17.17). Both the Old and New Testaments are without error in all that they affirm. They are truth without any mixture of error. Inspiration is plenary, meaning the whole Bible is inspired. The apostle Paul states, "All Scripture is inspired of God" (2 Tm. 3.16), not "Some Scripture is inspired of God." However, there are some who do not believe that all Scripture is inspired of God. We will now consider some of these partial inspiration views.” -- Michael Bremmer Please read the entire article at: http://www.mbrem.com/bible/bible.htm Concerning plenary: plenary is simply defined as being “full in all respects”. So plenary inspiration would indicate that God inspired all scripture. Inspiration - "That extraordinary supernatural influence exerted by the Holy Ghost on the writers of our Sacred Books, by which their words were rendered also the words of God, and therefore, perfectly infallible." (by Benjamin Warfield, The Inspiration and Authority of the Bible, P R, 1948; page 420) Verbal Inspiration - The inspiration extends to the very words of Scripture. Plenary Inspiration - The inspiration extends to every part of Scripture. Verbal Plenary Inspiration - This is the traditional orthodox view. It teaches a verbal inspiration, meaning that the Holy Spirit guided the human choice of every word in the original autographs. However, the human authorship was respected and the characteristics pf the human author was preserved. It teaches a plenary inspiration, always meaning that every portion of the original autographs is equally inspired, resulting in an inerrant, infallible and authoritative record of divine revelation. This is the best view for maintaining the "dual authorship" of the Bible. "By the term dual authorship two facts are indicated, namely, that, on the divine side, the Scriptures are the Word of God in the sense that they originate with Him and are the expressions of His mind alone; and, on the human side, certain men have been chosen of God for the high honor and responsibility of receiving God's Word and transcribing it into written form" (Lewis Sperry Chafer, Systematic Theology, Vol . 1 of 8, page 72). http://www.calvarychapel.com/redbarn/terms You ask: “Does paul know what he is writing will be considered some day to be the WOG?” I don’t know if he knew it would be compiled into a book with the others, but he spoke with the authority of speaking the word of God. He knew his source of inspiration. He specified he spoke with the authority of the Holy Spirit. WOS |

Just a quick response to this. Please realize it is not and never was my intent to have you change your thoughts or view Scripture from the way that you currently view it. Romans 14:1 Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. Romans 14:4 Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand. Romans 14:5 One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6He who regards one day as special, does so to the Lord. He who eats meat, eats to the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who abstains, does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. 8If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Romans 14:10 You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat. 11It is written: " 'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.' "[a] 12So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God. Romans 14:13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way. Romans 14:22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin. Merry Christmas Brother. By the way, His birth was observed, or haven’t you read: Luke 2:8And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." 13Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." I take it then you do not celebrate your Birthday either, for the Bible does not tell you to? WOS |

My point is, there is much the Bible doesn't speak to. If you use the argument "I don't do something because the Bible doesn't speak of it", and actually live to that, then you're either a hermit living in a cave somewhere, or you are not really living to that standard. We have a conscience, a God given conscience, that we need to be able to use. We must be discerning if we claim to belong to God and yet live in fleshy world. I know good and well where Christmas originated my friend. However, I choose to worship Christ on this day, I do not chase after pagan gods. Now if you really mean to inform me that simply because the Roman Church used December 25th to mark a celebration of the incarnation of our Lord in an attempt to gain pagan peoples, and that seems to be true, and because of that I can’t worship Christ on that day, you are surely mistaken. Evil triumphs on any day in which we feel it is improper to honor our God. I worship Christ on Christmas day as I will any day and there is none that can take that from me. So you mean to tell me, that on December 25th, you pay no homage to Christ? I’m sure that is not to His satisfaction. It seems to me that it would be more of an insult to Him to feel there is a day in which we should not honor the Lord. By the way, one should be grateful this day and age to get a “merry” anything, its not often many are willing to extend a greeting of good cheer. WOS |

I believe, no, I know, that when that is truly recognized and adhered to, that there is nothing so inconsequential as to a particular day of worship for our Lord that should seem offensive or contrary to another brothers belief. In the love we share of one another, the petty differences should be set aside and our focus should be on Christ. You can’t be looking up while you are looking down. And when you keep your focus down here, on ritual days, or things that shouldn’t be, you risk missing the prize, the glory that shines above. If in your heart, you feel so strongly, or in your spiritual growth you feel weakened, by the fact that some consider one day this and another day that, you must bear in mind, that every day is the Lord’s. Man holds no sovereignty over the days any more than we grasp control of our own salvation. Don’t be offended brother when someone wants to hold another day in higher regard when they do so for the One that will save them and the One that will save you. So to end my discussion, let me add just this: You are not being forced to worship Christ on any day, you should want to, out of love, every day, regardless of what or whom has attempted to make of a particular day. But on the other hand, you should not be forcing your opinions regarding the days on those who choose to worship at any given time. They worship the Lord, the very One who created the days. And as long as that is the case, neither you nor I are wrong. WOS |
