361 | Spirit of Christmas | Luke 2:14 | Wild Olive Shoot | 164209
“What is the spirit of Christmas? Worship, in a word, worship...nothing more and nothing less. And, you know, as you look back over the Christmases of the ages, and we do that every Christmas season, we go back through history. I'll tell you how we do it. We do it when we sing the carols. Do you realize that we've sung carols from as far back as the fifth century that have gone through several translations and finally reached us? And we've sang carols from the fifteenth century, the eleventh century, the seventeenth, the eighteenth, the sixteenth...as well as the nineteenth. And as you go back through the history of the Christmases and you touch those Christmas carols, you touch the most brilliant poets and articulators of Christmas truth and their attitude is always worship, it's always been worship.”... -- John MacArthur, Jr. ...“One of my favorite poets of the nineteenth century is Christina Rosetti who lived from 1830 to 1894. Christina was the daughter of Italian immigrants, a woman of great beauty, it is said, striking beauty. A woman if immense poetic talent, a devout Christian once engaged to a Roman Catholic who promised to convert. When he had second thoughts, she broke the engagement and remained single all her life. Through that life she wrote some of the most magnificent poetry, all of it a tribute to Christ. She wrote this poem and it was set to music twelve years after her death. "In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone. Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow in the bleak midwinter long ago. Our God, heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain. Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed, the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim throng the air, but His mother only in her maiden bliss worshiped the beloved with a kiss." Then she ends with this great, great stanza, "What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I'd give Him a lamb. If I were a wise man I'd do my part, but what can I give Him? Give my heart." That's worship.”... -- John MacArthur, Jr. © 1997 Grace to You http://www.biblebb.com/files/MAC/80-152.HTM WOS |

365 | Election | 1 Pet 1:2 | Wild Olive Shoot | 163944
Brother Tim, Truly, I see your point concerning v7. But throughout the rest of this chapter, it appears that God will recover “His elect”. Though they are temporarily hardened, the true seed of Abraham will not remain that way, as God will lift their blindness. I see that although they have not received the gift, as of yet, because of their rejection, God, as punishment, has allowed them to remain that way until He has effectually called all of His other elect. “that they shall be saved” (v26) is indicative of their election. God has already declared that they would be saved thereby establishing them as the elect. God did not bind Himself to forever exclude those in which He hardened as indicated in v23. Some of those temporarily hardened have a gift to claim and a calling from God to be heard (v29), God will see that His elect receive and hear in their due time. Thank you a bunch for putting up with me for a while, but I find your thoughts on this subject to be intriguing to say the least. WOS |

366 | Election | 1 Pet 1:2 | Wild Olive Shoot | 163926
Tim, Doesn’t v28 and 29 indicate that they are still undeniably the elect? My point I guess is that they (some) are still the elect just temporarily cut off, still secure of their election, unbeknownst to them maybe, but declared by God, to be grafted back in after the fullness of the gentiles have come in. After the fullness of the gentiles would seem to me that there is a set number known by God or a definite point in time when the stupor will be lifted from the elect. Maybe I’m way off, but I get the sense that the remnant was still declared as the elect long ago and that the hardening was determined that the gospel could be given to the gentiles to raise jealousy. After all: Rom 10:21 But as to Israel he saith, All the day long did I spread out my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people. It seems to me that the hardening is God’s way of making Israel jealous for His grace so that they may fully recognize or understand His mercy when grafting them back in based only on their faith. I truly see your point as to the distinction between the elect and the hardened in v7. But it seems, to me anyhow, that v23 shows for sure, that some will be grafted back in and those who shall be, are the very elect mentioned in v28 and those that are not grafted in, would be those God chose not to or those who aren’t the elect. So the “natural branches” (those that have always been or those temporarily cut off and grafted back in) as well as the “wild olive shoots” were always the elect but just not united. But as God has purposed, they will be unified, those that are His chosen that is, and come together as one body as indicated also Ephesians 2:11-22. God has His elect and simply uses them for His purpose and in a manner that is beneficial and attributable to His infinite knowledge and wisdom in bringing His elect to Him. Just my simple perspective. Thank you for your response and thoughts. I can see you all have been involved with this subject quite a bit lately. I’m still trying to take it all in and catch up, so please bear with me if you will. WOS |

Hi Tim, A question for your question I guess: Is the reference to those that were hardened indicative of a perpetual state? v25 and 26 would seem to indicate that their hardness was temporary, and at a length set by God Himself. So wouldn't they still be the elect, only temporarily hardened to fulfill the purpose of advancing the Gospel to the Gentiles? This would allow for God to graft them back in at the time he deemed appropriate still being the chosen and having their blindness removed. It doesn’t necessarily specify that the hardened were not the elect to begin with. Some are hardened forever, some temporarily, but all at God’s discretion according to His eternal purpose. This may have been touched upon in the thread already, it is lengthy and rather difficult to follow along, so please accept my apology if I have inadvertently asked a question that has been addressed. Scoop715, I don't believe at the Great White Throne judgment, there will be any believers. But at Christ's judgment seat, we will have to give an account. But once there, that's it. You misunderstand the judgments my friend. The Judgment Seat of Christ. The first of these will be the judgment of the believer’s works, called “The Judgment Seat of Christ.” For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ (Romans 14:10). For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10). Revelation 20:12-15 depicts the Great White Throne Judgement. No believer will be judged at that day as the final judgment is reserved for all who rejected the Lord Jesus Christ on earth. WOS |

Salvation is only "cultivated" through God. If you think your salvation is dependant on anything you do, you are surely mistaken. You use a bunch of “we” in your post. Dear winningside, Philippians 1:6 (NASB) For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. John 6:39 (NASB) "This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 (NASB) 21Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, 22who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge. 1 Peter 1:3-5 (NASB) 3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. John 10:27-29 (NIV) 27My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. 29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. John 17:6-11 (NIV) 6"I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one. Considering the last passage I quoted: Do you really believe God will not answer that prayer of His Son? WOS |

374 | Did God create Life? | Gen 1:1 | Wild Olive Shoot | 162877
Just some Scripture to ponder in considering what God has created. It is ALL things. Isaiah 57:16(NIV) I will not accuse forever, nor will I always be angry, for then the spirit of man would grow faint before me— the breath of man that I have created. Ephesians 3:9(NIV) and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. Colossians 1:16 (NIV) For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. Revelation 4:11(NIV) "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being." Revelation 10:6(NIV) And he swore by him who lives for ever and ever, who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it, and said, "There will be no more delay! 375 | Suicide: a question on sin | 1 Cor 6:19 | Wild Olive Shoot | 162187
And you don't suppose that God can work His healing through medical doctors? Bottom line, I really don't know if refusing treatment is a sin or not, or suicide to be inline with the original question, but I do believe that it is probably not the smartest thing to do, to refuse medical treatment when God has given us the ability to treat certain ailments. I still say it is arrogantly testing our Lord. WOS |

brenda L, But we are not to disregard the commandments of our Lord either. Matthew 22:37 And He said to him, " ' YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' John 14:15 " If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. John 14:21 " He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him." John 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, " If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. John 14:24 "He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father's who sent Me. 1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. 378 | Is it always a sin to lie? | Ex 20:16 | Wild Olive Shoot | 162077
Makarios, I spoke of Jacob only because you asked me to. You asked: “Was the fact that Moses lived to help deliver Israel from the Egyptians an example of misery, loss and judgment? Was Jacob not blessed by the Lord in Genesis 27? And can you find any mention in all of Genesis of Jacob being 'punished' for his lie?” I know God knew what would happen. But I’m confident that Jacob (Israel) was justified by faith and not any one act that he did and that yes, he was chosen by God long before he did any of those things. But again Makarios, Jacob, as well as the midwives concerning the Hebrew woman giving birth, were looked upon favorably because of their faith, in spite of what they did, not because of what they did. Since we now seem to be running in circles, can we agree to leave this debate? WOS |

379 | Is it always a sin to lie? | Ex 20:16 | Wild Olive Shoot | 162055
Makarios, Please do not twist my words. I never said there are times when lying is appropriate. I said: “Now, I’m not saying that there aren’t times when to lie seems appropriate.” “SEEMS” appropriate, that is in our eyes and in our thinking. I never said Rebekah died as a result of Jacob’s deception. I said: “Did Jacob ever see his mother again, whom he loved so dearly?” And the answer to that is no he did not. Concerning the rest of what I stated pertaining to Jacob and his deception, you asked if I could find mention of Jacob being punished for his act. Those I pointed out were a direct result of his act, those don’t seem like rewards to me. And they are a direct result of his deception. Had he not deceived, he would have had no reason to leave and fear for his life, thereby avoiding much of what had happened. I clearly see the lesson of the consequences of deception and lying with Jacob, not rewards. The question of this thread is it always a sin to lie. Yes it is. I never intended to imply that we don’t, only that God does not and cannot reward sin (lies) but can use the consequences to His eternal purpose. I don’t intend to convince you otherwise. My only intent was to point out that a lie is a sin and always is in the eyes of God. In our minds we may see benefit from lying but that doesn’t in any way, shape or form make it acceptable to God.
