1541 | WHAT DOES PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT MEAN? | 1 Cor 14:15 | Ray | 55015
Hi DianeDew, I think that the point to be made is that there is a difference between "spirit" and the "Spirit". The question as it is being posed to us in all capitals doesn't give us any clarity for your study either. Personally, if I were to pray in the Spirit, I would pray with the spirit. Paul with his mind, has written five words here in 1 Corinthians. They are all in lower case and are not speaking about the Spirit of God. Verse 2, "in his spirit he speaks mysteries. Verse 14, "my spirit prays". Verse 15, "I shall pray with the spirit...I shall sing with my spirit". Otherwise if you bless in [Or, with the] spirit only..." "five words Ray" typed into the search option will probably bring up some past discussions on this. John 6:63 says, "It is the Spirit that gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life." Please note the capitalization. The Son of Man who ascended is Spirit and His words are spirit and life. Our words are spirit also, I believe. With that thought in mind I would put spirit in lower case for 1 Corinthians 7:40. "But in my opinion she is happier if she remains as she is; and I think that I also have the spirit of God." 1 Corinthians 4:20, "For the kingdom of God does not consist in words,[word, NKJ] but in power. What do you desire? Shall I come to you with a rod or with love and a spirit of gentleness?" Do you find the five spirit words here? 1 Cor. 4:21-6:17. 1 Cor 6:17, "But the one who joins himself to the Lord/ is one spirit with Him." Galatians 3:20, "...God/ is only one." 1 Corinthians 2:7, "but we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God/ predestined before the ages to our glory; the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would no have crucified the Lord of glory;..." 1 Cor 3:18, "Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become foolish that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God/." Romans 12:1, "I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God/, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship." 1542 | WHAT DOES PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT MEAN? | 1 Cor 14:15 | Ray | 55021
Hi Searcher, You have given us some good thoughts here. I believe that when we pray in the Spirit we pray with God's will and thoughts in our mind. Ephesians 6:18 gave Romans 8:26 as a reference verse. Ephesians 6:18, "With all prayer and petition pray at all time in the Spirit/, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints." Romans 8:26, "And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God/." |

Hi retxar, I was led in a very short preliminary search to Zechariah 12:10. This talks of a spirit of grace and of supplication and the time of writing is before tongues. Zechariah 12:10, "And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit [Or, a spirit] of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me/ whom they pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a first-born." Combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words, I offer this comparison verse. John 19:36,37, "For these things came to pass, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, "Not a bone of Him shall be broken." And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him/ whom they pierced." From the heart, Ray |

Dear Truth Seeker, Why do you say "should?"
1546 | Why five words? | 1 Cor 14:19 | Ray | 2095
Hi Truth Seeker or anyone interested in 1 Cor. 14. The number seven is associated in the bible with completeness and in this chapter you can be be completely edified in the use of tongues. "What is the bottom line then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification." When the apostle Paul speaks about the mind, I look for five words. If I shouldn't say this, forgive me, but for me I found the five words spoken of in l Cor 14:19 "I desire to speak five words with my mind, that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue." I found them in verses 16, 17 and back in verse 2. |

Hi Hank, The difference between ten thousand and five isn't what is important. If that were the case Paul should have used the number one. What is important is that the ten thousand were not understood and the five can be if sought out. Sooner, Ray P.S. There is a difference between numerology and the significance of numbers in the bible.

P.S. I found the words in verses 14, 15, 16, and verse 2 of 1Cor 14. This is a correction of a posting. The seven words "of edification" you can find for yourselves if interested.
1549 | Have we been resisting the holy spirit? | 1 Cor 14:22 | Ray | 51466
Hi leolipwee, Although you have said, "yes, I believe..." we are not in agreement with each other because of the differences in capitalization. I have said that the Holy Spirit is not an "it" but a "He". If the word "it" is used, for me it means a gift, a promise, or a power that is distinguished from a Person. In other words, I find nothing wrong with thinking of the holy spirit that we receive from God as being an "it", but the Holy Spirit that gives us this power, gift, promise, etc. is a Person. And I show that by capitalizing His name. I distinguish between a gift and the Giver. We know that He is a Person when we read Acts 13:2, "...the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." They were sent out by the Holy Spirit. But when I read of the filling of the *holy *spirit I find no verse that would give indication of a Person as the "Me" and the "I" does for Acts 13:2. The 8 times of being "filled with the Holy Spirit" I listed in my other post. Check them out to find a pronoun that would suggest that this "holy spirit" was a Person. As far as a word study for "resist" I found Romans 9:19, "For who resists His will?" and Romans 13:2, "Therefore he who resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves." Also, 2 Chronicles 13:8, "So now you intend to resist the kingdom of the Lord..." These references speak of resisting the will, authority, and kingdom of God; but can anyone conceive of the possibility of resisting Him as a Person? Wrestling with an Angel is the closest I can think of, but the other guy came out of the match worst for wear. That wasn't an example of resisting though. Right now I can't resist the call of my bed. Later. From the heart, Ray |

Hi Tim, Thanks for the list concerning the Holy Spirit. I will be going through the list. May I look at Isaiah 63:10 with you so that I may ask a question of you? First of all let me say that I go with the NKJ with its capitalization of Angel but not "Presence" for Isaiah 63:9. This Angel is the Holy Spirit of verse 10 for my mind. But my question is for verse 11. It talks of God's flock and says, "Where is He who put His *holy *spirit in the midst of them, who caused His glorious ARM to go at the right hand of Moses,..." My own emphasis for the word arm. Do you have any space in your belief system for the existance of a *holy *spirit, an arm of power if you will, or a finger of God? How much are you willing to translate the "who" of Ephesians 1:13 into a "which"? For that matter, how much would you be willing to make the word truth capitalized there? Isaiah 63:1 talks of "...This One who is majestic in His apparel, Marching in the greatness of His strength?" There was no man with Him; but His own arm brought salvation to Him. Isaiah 63:5 says, "I looked, and there was no *one to help, And I was astonished and there was no *one to uphold; So My own *arm brought salvation to Me; And My wrath upheld Me." How much are you open to the idea of Jesus being filled with the holy spirit, as well as being the Holy Spirit? You spoke of the things being done by a Person, not just a force or power. Do you have room in your belief system for the Person AND ALSO, IN ADDITION, a force, or power, or arm, or finger, or some other gentle spirit, or "it"? Just food for thought as I respect your opinion. Remember that my study in the word of God is one that is in progress as is everyone's, and I am glad that God loves us all wherever we are in our walk with Him. From the heart, Ray |

Hi Melanie, Your question on Jer 31:33,34 should probably be asked in a new thread. I would like to give some comparison Scriptures that show to me that they are fulfilled in Christ. Jeremiah 31:31, "Behold, days are coming," declares the Lord/, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,..." John 6:48, "I/ am the *Bread of life." Jeremiah 31:34, "And they shall not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, 'KNOW THE LORD', for they shall all KNOW ME, from the least of them to the greatest of them," declares the Lord, "for I/ will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." John 8:32, "and you shall KNOW THE TRUTH, and THE TRUTH shall set you free." [I used the bold type for comparison, but for me I am talking about the Truth] John 6:54, "He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I/ will raise him up on the last day." John 6:45, "It is written in the prophets; 'AND THEY SHALL BE TAUGHT OF GOD/'. Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me." Perhaps you would like to state your thoughts about Jeremiah 31:33 and ask a question on that thread. From the heart, Ray |

1552 | How to harmonize this passage | 1 Cor 14:34 | Ray | 109087
Hi Steve, 1 Corinthians 14:32,32, says, "For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted; and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; for God is not a God of confusion but of peace." The period after peace is an alternate reading in the margin of my Study Bible. What I can picture in my mind is Paul using the next two verses as a prophecy that is subject to prophets. Here is what is subject to prophets, "As in all the churches of the saints, let the women keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but let them subject themselves, just as the Law also says. And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church." In my mind I can hear Paul responding to this prophecy, "Was it from you that the word of God first went forth? Or has it come to you only?" I think that Paul would have all of us, men and women, built up in Him and established in our faith; not according to the traditions of men but according to Christ. See Colossians 2:6-8. 1554 | What's Jesus' position? | 1 Cor 15:27 | Ray | 56167
Hi christian7, The testimony of Thomas is a good point to bring up in conversation with a Jehovah's Witness. Their NWT of 1961 still renders it "My Lord and my God." No lower case "god" in their translation yet. From the heart, Ray |

Hi Stokey, Here are your Scripture references. Please excuse the parentheses which are mine for suggested comparison. Matthew 15:3-6, "And He answered and said to them, "And why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the said of your tradition? For (God) said, 'Honor your father and mother...5 "But you say,"...has been given to God," 6 he is not to honor his father or his mother. And thus you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition." That is an example of the danger of invalidation because of adding to the Scriptures. Psalm 83:18, "That them may know that Thou alone, whose name is the Lord, Art the (Most) High over all the earth." A companion verse could be John 17:3, "And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true (God), and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent. I glorified Thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which Thou/ hast given Me to do. And now, glorify Thou (Me) together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was. I manifested Thy/ name..." Matthew 6:9, "Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy/ name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven..." [For (Thine) is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen] John 12:28, "Father, glorify Thy name." There came therefore a voice out of heaven: "I/ have both glorified it, and will glorify it again." The multitude therefore, who stood by and heard it, were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, "An angel has spoken to Him." Jesus answered and said, "This voice has not come for (My) sake, but for your sakes." John 17:26, "and I have made Thy name known to them, and will make it known; that the love wherewith Thou didst love Me may be in them, and I/ in them." John 10:27,28, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I/ give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand. My (Father) who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are *One." The Jews took up stones to stone Him/." 1 John 5:5, "And who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that (Jesus) is the Son of God? This is the *One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ;..." 1 John 5:6, NKJ, "This is He who came by water and blood--Jesus Christ;..." 1 Corinthians 15:27, "For He has put all things in subjection under His/ feet. But when He says, "All things are put in subjection," it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him. And when all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, that God/ may be all in all." I hope that these comparisons will help us to see that God is true and that Jesus and the Father are One. 1 John 5:7, "And it is the Spirit/ who bears witness, because the Spirit is the truth. 1556 | What's Jesus' position? | 1 Cor 15:27 | Ray | 56263
Hi Stokey, You believe that Jesus and the Father are "one". Are you speaking of one God or one god? For you see, I capitalized the "One" showing His Deity thereby. For 1 Corinthians 11:3 I too see that God is the head of Christ because the passage is talking about the order of authority that needs to be present. But I also see the Headship of Christ here. The Jehovah's Witnesses do not acknowledge the Deity of Christ as for instance you render John 1:1, as "and the Word was a god." I believe that capitalization is a matter of interpretation. I will go with "and the Word was God." For 1 Corinthians 11:3,4 here is my rendering as interpretation using capitalization, for what it is worth. "But I want you to understand that Christ is the Head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ. Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying, disgraces his Head." For 1 Corinthians 15:27 "it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to (Him). And when all things are subjected to Him then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him..." The bottom line is "that God/ may be all in all." Notice the capitalization of the Son Himself. I recommend the NKJ and the NASB for you to better understand the interpretation that is naturally established in the Scriptures. The NKJ does not have "Jehovah" in it. However, remember that not everyone who says, "Lord, Lord" will enter the kingdom of heaven. The names of the Lord are many. For instance, Lord God, Lord Jesus, Lord Christ. Paul, in Colossians 3:24 says that it is the Lord Christ/ whom you serve. Even your NWT adds, "Slave for the Master, Christ". I say again, may God be all in all. Jesus made His authority and His name known. From the heart, Ray |

Hi Hank, Going to the used book store is an excellent suggestion. I believe that I purchased mine there and I buried it in my locker at work; and used it to understand the viewpoint of a friend at work. Now, after a recent retirement, I will be able to do the same here on the forum. But as you know, I'll go with the capitalized versions.:) The Jehovah's Witnesses do things that we can respect. Their willingness to share what they believe, their study of the material and Scriptures available to them, and their time spent in service are things that we can respect. I think that we have to teach our church members much more fully what the Scriptures teach. And we must have more love and acceptance of people as they are. We need to relate with people in a "God is not finished with us yet" attitude. Always learning and desiring to know God fully. Otherwise, people can be led astray by these that know their specific Scriptures well and who are evidently happy in their surroundings and feel loved by their fellow members. But as far as the used book store is concerned; I remember looking at the stacks of Bibles at Kregel's book store years and years ago. I was "searching" the Scriptures and I am happy that I was first led to the NASB. From the heart, Ray |

Hi Asis, Thank you for taking the time to give me this information because I have been trying to find out what Pentecostal felt they were filled with. However, I need you to talk more with me because I don't know what you are filled or baptized with. You have said that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit results in the speaking in tongues. You have said that Jesus baptizes us with the evidence of speaking in another language. You have said that we give ourselves over to the Holy Spirit and Jesus baptizes us. 1) This shows me that you have a blend of the Holy Spirit and Jesus that is the Baptizer. What are you baptized with? With what does the Holy Spirit/Jesus baptize? What causes them to speak in tongues? 2) You said that we can quench that utterance from the Holy Spirit. 1 Thess 5:19,20 says, "Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances." What is quenched then; the spiritual utterances (prophecies) or the Spirit? I would interpret it as "Do not quench the spirit; do not despise prophecies." I would say that we should be filled with holy spirit, being baptized with holy spirit. How far are we apart in how we see this? From the heart, Ray |

Hi Justme, Thank you for your post. Thank you for your prayers and know that I will be praying for you as well. I agree with you about the Helper, the Holy Spirit. When you come to Acts 2:33,38 I believe that you have to differentiate between the gift and the Giver of the promised gift. So I would agree with Holy Spirit in verse 33 as being the Giver of the promise, but see verse 38 as being the gift being received, the holy spirit. I'll talk to you later, brother. Hi Gracefull, My copy of Strong's for #1968 differs from what you wrote. You wrote: Strong's 1968 2. metaph. 1.to fall upon one i.e. to seize, take possession of him a. of the Holy Spirit, in his inspiration and impulse My Abindon Strong's reads: 1968. epipipto, from 1909 and 4098; to embrace (with affection) or seize (with more or less violence; lit. or fig.): --fall into (on, upon), lie on, press upon. The Person of the Holy Spirit does not take possesion of us or control us, do you think? 1) You wrote:"I do not believe the Holy Spirit infilling was ever supposed to be considered 'optional' for the believer, and scripture seeems to indicate (as I believe) it is something to be received after salvation." So my question is again, "Do we receive the baptism (the infilling) or do we receive the Holy Spirit?" You wrote that "it" was something to be received after salvation. From the heart, Ray |
