301 | Roman guard myth? | Matt 28:11 | JCrichton | 122163
Hi, Norrie! Perhaps you are a stickler to the letter of the translation: Matthew 28:11-15 28:11 - Now while they were on their way, some of the guards went off into the city to tell the chief priests all that had happened. 28:12 - These held a meeting with the elders and, after some discussion, handed a considerable sum of money to the soldiers 28:13 - with these instructions, 'This is what you must say, "his disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep." 28:14 - and should the governor come to hear of this, we undertake to put things right with him ourselves and to see that you do not get into trouble.' 28:15 - so they took the money and carried out their instructions, and to this day that is the story among the Jews. 28:12 talks about soldiers--why would the Romans allow the Jewish people to maintain an army within Roman occupied territory? 28:14 talks about the chief priests vowing to protect them from the governor--why the Roman governor get involved in a Jewish dispute about some guards that fell asleep while guarding some "nonsense" tomb? 18:15 talks about them taking "a considerable sum" of money from the chief priests--why would the priests, as shrewd as they were, give additional moneys to their own temple guards to perform a task that would be an extension of their service? 28:15 - talks about a story passed among the Jews--do you not think that if simple temple guards were outsmarted by Jesus' disciples the story would carry less and less wieght with the passing of time? Now Romans guards... that's a different story! The Romans were known for ther fierceness, their military code of conduct, and their unyielding valor (translation: if they failed their superior officers they could be imprisoned or killed!). Please reread Matthew 28:11-15 and think about this: why would the chief priests need to go to the Romans to post their own temple guards on the tomb, and why would the Romans care if the guards did a poor job at the tomb of a Jew? God Bless! Angel |

302 | Roman guard myth? | Matt 28:11 | JCrichton | 122289
Hi, Norrie! When I directed you to reread the passage I really meant the Biblical passage... Still, Paul Maier cite sources which still leave gaps as to the actual events that took place in regards to Jesus' tomb! What I have attempted to point out is that: 1) Romans would not allow Jewish guards outside of the Temple or religious affairs--they would open themselves up for insurgencies if zelots were to infiltrate the Temple Guard and have free reing of the territory. 2) The chief priests would not have to ask for guards; rather they would have asked for permission to allow their guards free access to Jesus' tomb. 3) The Temple Guard would most likely not be paid "piece work;" since they were part of the daily Temple activities they would have a base salary which would have been paid on a regular basis, rather then on lump sums... why would the chief priests pay them a large sum of money to undertake an assignment which could easily have been deemed extra-Temple activity?--keeping secrets for the priests would be an obligatory task for those whose livelyhood depended upon the priests' graces! 4) Why would the Roman governor care that Jewish guards fell asleep while guarding the tomb of a Jewish "no-body?" (Did you read the part, in the Bible, when the Jews sought the Romans to resolve Jesus' crucifixion?--the Romans did not have high regards for the Jews! Why would they care about the affairs of Temple sentry failing to properly guard the tomb of a dead Jew?) 5) You mentioned that the guards reported to the chief priests at discovering the empty tomb... were the guards' commissioned to guard the tomb for the Romans or for the Jews? Would it not have been logical for them to report to those who issued the commission rather to those who could have care less? 6) This final point is based on Jewish ceremonial customs: Since the Jews required that the Sabbath be respected (zip work, zip traveling, zip commerce, zip anything that would make them "unclean"), why would they post Temple guards at an "unclean" site during Sabbath? God Bless! Angel |

Hi, Norrie! Sorry you are experiencing difficulties... I have had my share... working for over 30 minutes only to lose the material while attempting to post... Since I use several Bible references my original thoughts, as well as some of the passages cited, are lost... Now I use the old "save every x minutes" rule (though at times I forget to do so!)... this has cut my loss to an acceptable minimum! So next time you post: highlight the content of the text box prior to depressing the "Preview" button (this could be also done from the "Preview page"), right click mouse, and copy; this will hold your text in temporary memory. If you lose your post, you can retrieve it to the empty text box by right clicking the mouse and pasting. (At this time you can proceed to make necessary corrections/changes before you attempt to post once again. Good luck! God Bless! Angel |

Hi, Norrie! I think part of the problem is that some of the symbols on the key-board may interfere with the command symbols of the various programs running through the servers... Perhaps there could be a program that would overide any unintentional interference but it may be too costly or cumbersome to run (slowing down the system) and would prove counter productive to a speedy exchange on the forum. Perhaps one day not only would that be a problem of the past, but, may haps, we would be able to use a variation of fonts and colors! God Bless! Angel |

305 | Is God male as opposed to female? | Matt 28:19 | JCrichton | 133098
"I don't believe that a mortal mind can truly comprehend God's full nature," Hi, Reighnskye! I respect your opinion and I totally agree with part of your statement (quoted above)... Yet, the fact that God applied the male gender to Himself (as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and the fact that He chose the male to represent Him in matters of worship and leadership (with the exception of a few far-in-between females) lead me to believe that He has preferred the male gender as His identifying sex--though I do concur with you, this self-definition is not dependent on male reproductive organs! 306 | Filled with the holy spirit? | Mark 1:10 | JCrichton | 148893
Hi, Ray! It was a pure oversight... I am not as good a proof reader as I would like to be... it was only after my reply was posted that I caught the error... the Holy Spirit is God so He is the Giver! As far as the translation... my language skills are limited to English and Spanish (I can derive some understanding from certain root words from the related languages such as Italian, Portuguese, and French and some Latin), so I cannot add much to the translation of Greek... I can relate this argument to Scripture... and state with certainty that both translations would be correct as we know that Jesus told us that He would send the Holy Spirit from the Father (John 15:26), and He also said that He, the Holy Spirit, would be with us and in us (John 14:17)... Peter, in Acts 2:14-18, reminds us that the prophet Joel prophesied that the Holy Spirit would come in the last days (Jesus' incarnation, death, resurrection and ascension)... finally, we know that the Apostles gave the Holy Spirit to the Believers through the imposition of the hands (Acts 8:18)... Since the Holy Spirit is God, He can be both the Gift and the Giver--He is Omnipresent being both able to indwell in the Believers as well as be among the Believers! ...for the purpose of illustration: We find in Acts the description of a direct intercesion by the Holy Spirit as He commands a Believer to seek out a specific uniniciated man... this man who is thirsting for the Truth is brought into the fold and it is the Holy Spirit (the Giver) who Wills this anointment (the gift) of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 8:26-39) Ray, now I need clarification... the Holy Spirit is seen by some as some type of energy or something like it... so when you say, "I simply am suggesting the holy spirit as a gift," are you saying that you believe that the Holy Spirit is restricted to an energy or the embodiment of charismas/dynamics? God Bless! Angel |

308 | The gift of God | Mark 1:10 | JCrichton | 148960
Hi, terrib! It amazes me how close they can come to the Truth... it is almost a pop-faith... (the hand of God, the sleeper, the universe's super being (sounds like quizaht zadharak--or something to that effect), the "voice"... and doing a crossover to "the force..." though not quite exacting, they are speaking of Jesus Christ, God and the Holy Spirit! ...if only they would drink from the Fountain... perhaps they would discover why they seem to have needed to introduce such themes! God Bless! Angel |

309 | Filled with the holy spirit? | Mark 1:10 | JCrichton | 149079
Hi, Ray! ...problem is that one of us loves Pepsy and the other Coke... they are uh sooo very close, but Pepsy lovers contend that theirs is the drink of the hour while Coca Cola lovers contend that theirs is the drink of the hour... I will offer you one more Scripture, though, from your previous interpretation, I doubt that you will see anything other than what you've already stated... In Acts 5:29-32 Peter concludes his thought by naming the Holy Spirit as both a witness (one who actively involved in an incident) and God's gift... I will also refer you to Acts 5:3 and 4 where Peter warns that Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit, not to man but to God... Also, Jesus did not say that He would give us many gifts that would teach us the fullness of Truth, He said that the Holy Spirit would teach us the fullness of Truth (John 16:13)... Further, it is not a gift that brings us to God but the thrid Person of God, the Holy Spirit... Christ Jesus is God and He does not need any gift in order to Exist... but the Holy Spirit was directly involved in both His incarnation (Luke 1:35) and resurrection (Romans 1:4--of course, since it doesn't say Holy Ghost/Spirit you would most likely argue that this passage is speaking about some sort of spiritual beign like an angel or something...); before you dismiss these passages, I suggest that you read related Scriptural passages and think of them collectively... by divorcing one segment of Scripture from all others we may get a warped understanding of God's Word... remember, Jesus did not leave a spirit in charge of the Church... it is only the other Paraclete who can lead and teach the Church, just as of old when He inspired the holy men of God to prophesy about God's Salvafic Plan. God Bless! Angel |

310 | Filled with the holy spirit? | Mark 1:10 | JCrichton | 149151
Hi, Ray! I understand how you would opt to pencil in the text as to distinguish the Holy Spirit as the counselor and the Holy Spirit once He is in us... I suggest to you that He does not diminishes in His capacity, just as Jesus did not diminished as the Lamb of God... so whether to Holy Spirit is guiding the Church or indwelling in an individual, He is the Holy Spirit! (water as liquid, solid, gas is still water) ...and yes, the truth that is disclosed is Jesus so I emphasized this by capitalizing the "t" (Truth)... He is the truth/Truth that sets us free! (resurrection and life) Some Bible versions have "the spirit of sanctification;" yet, since we know that there is only one "spirit of sanctification," I suggest that the "s" in spirit should always be capitalized! It is the Holy Spirit that sanctifies the Word (both Christ and the Holy Scripture) and the believers! God Bless! Angel |

311 | Filled with the holy spirit? | Mark 1:10 | JCrichton | 149223
Hi, Ray! There was no oversight... I could also understand how you see indweling of the Holy Spirit and being filled with the holy spirit as something that is determined by an action not who is doing the act... We can never contain God in our limited being... but when we read Genesis we find that man was created in the image and likeness of God, and that, as no other being, God gave life to man by an influx of His Spirit... We also learned from Scripture that Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to the Eleven prior to Pentecost... but that it was at the meeting during Pentecost that all of the gathered disciples received the Holy Spirit in a visible measure to let the world know that the prophecy in Joel was being fulfilled! ...each time, we are but simple vessels that cannot contain God... it is through His mercy that we receive, according to His design, an influx or indwelling of His Spirit! God Bless! Angel |

312 | Blasphemy against Holy Spirit | Mark 3:30 | JCrichton | 119000
"Accd to them, the greatest blasphemy is for a Christian to turn back away from Christ. I'd think if you did that, that would be the ultimate sin." Hi, Norrie! How do we turn back from Christ if not by rejecting the Holy Spirit? In the Old Testament time Israel had to deal directly with Yahweh, through the prophets and priests. At the fullness of times (God's Plan) they and the gentiles had to deal directly with Christ. At Christ's ascension we all have to deal directly with the Holy Spirit: John 14:15-17, 25-26; 16:4-15; Acts 2:1-11; 5:1-4... Why would people prefer to serve the beast and, obstinately, reject and curse God, even at their eminent demise (Revelation 16:8-9) and eternal peril? What truly is sad is the fact that it is within our means to choose life (Jesus) and many us (humanity) continue to reject Him! God Bless! Angel |

313 | Blasphemy against Holy Spirit | Mark 3:30 | JCrichton | 119035
"I always heard pagans on these different forums say they were a Christian and turned away. These guys were discussing Christians who became Jews, that seems unconceivable either way." Hi, Norrie! Here's what Jude said about those people: But remember, my dear friends, what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. 'At the final point of time', they told you, 'there will be mockers who follow nothing but their own godless desires.' It is they who cause division, who live according to nature and do not possess the Spirit. But you, my dear friends, must build yourselves up on the foundation of your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves within the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to give you eternal life. To some you must be compassionate because they are wavering; others you must save by snatching them from the fire; to others again you must be compassionate but wary, hating even the tunic stained by their bodies. (Jude 1:17-23) To the same respect John says: Children, this is the final hour; you ahve heard that the Antichrist is coming, and now many Antichrists have already come; from this we know that it is the final hour. They have gone from among us, but they never really belonged to us; if they had belonged to us, they would have stayed with us. But this was to prove that not one of them belonged to us. But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and have all received knowledge. (1 John 2:18-20) In that same vein Paul, speaking to the Corinthians, tells us this: Because of that, I want to make it quite clear to you that no one who says 'A curse on Jesus' can be speaking in the Spirit of God, and nobody is able to say, 'Jesus is Lord' except in the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:3) These three passages clearly prove that Satan will attempt to infiltrate the Church, cause confusion and division, and pilfer both the strength of the Church and her weak members! The wolves in sheep clothing will not always stay on the outskirts of the Church--they will follow their father and infiltrate the Church, and because they do not have the Spirit of God in them they cannot profess to be in Christ; nonetheless, they will usurp the Truth--to the point of saying that they believe in the Lord and that they are saved and born again! (No wonder Christ Jesus warned that not all who called Lord would be saved!) Their actions will reveal the Truth because, as Paul said, without the Holy Spirit no one can claim to be Christian (in the service of Christ) and no one can gain salvation but through Christ! "I guess I still struggle w/once saved, always saved because it seems so many have said I reject that once accepted and it seems that that is the only way you can become unsaved." If we reflect on 1 Corinthians 12:13 it would take us back to Jesus' words in Matthew and Luke: 'It is not anyone who says to me, "Lord, Lord," who will enter the kingdom of Heaven, but the person who does the will of my Father in heaven. When the day comes many will say to me, "Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, drive out demons in your name, work many miracles in your name?" Then I shall tell them to their faces: I have never known you; away from me, all evil doers! (Matthew 7:21-23) 'Why do you call me, "Lord, Lord" and not do what I say? (Luke 6:46) Those people, all of us, really, have been warned. There is no escape from the Hand of God! Their place has been prepared for them and Judgment is not far off (2 Peter 2:1-22) God Bless! 314 | how do i tune into gods will 4 my life | Mark 4:20 | JCrichton | 145142
Hi, worleybird72! I understand that there are many doctrines that suggest that we are free to do as we please... the catch is that we cannot place God first if we choose to do things that are contrary to His Will... in the first letter of John, he talks about the Light (God) and how we are to not only claim (say) that we are in the Light, but that we must walk (be) in the Light (1 John 1:5 thru 2:2)... James puts it in a slightly different way... he tells us to be doers of the Word not just hearers (James 1:22)... We cannot please God by surrendering to the cravings of the flesh (Romans 8:5-17); we would only find death if we live by the flesh (Romans 6:23)... You ask how would you know you are doing something pleasing to God?... you are! When we willfully return to God ("I am in a transition process in my life coming out of addiction."), that is the biggest step towards pleasing Him! (Luke 15:7) We are God's Temple (John 14:16-17, 23; 1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 6:19-20; 2 Corinthians 6:16-18) and God cannot be please when we choose to indulge ourselves with all sorts of unwholesome practices... but when we repent from our sins and turn to God with all our heart and might, He is Wonderful and Merciful enough to forgive us... He cleanses us of all and wipes the slate clean (Isaiah 1:18-19; 1 John 1:9)... Scripture is clear about the things that please and the ones that do not: 19The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and selfcontrol. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. (Galatians 5:19-25) When we are in fellowship with Christ we labor to do the things that please God (Galatians 5:22-23) and we fight all tendencies that drives us to do the things that displease God (Galatians 5:19-21)... Contrary to what some believe, Christians will not have things dropped on their laps... to wait on God simply means to act with diligence and patience... we are not called to be afraid of the world... we are called to walk in the Light... anything that we do which places us against God, we know, from God's Word, that it is the wrong thing to do! (ie: a job that requires you to, knowingly, deprive, cheat, oppress... others, is definitely not a job that God wants you to fill; having sexual relations with "a soul-mate" prior to marriage is not God's doing but ours; associating with people who transgress against God is a step in the wrong direction--we must sorround ourselves with those seeking to serve Jesus in order to find a true place where we can "belong" (Matthew 18:20)...)... "How do ensure I'm making the right choices to make my God proud." Humble yourself to God; seek Him daily; familiarize yourself with His Word; make the Holy Scripture and important exercise in your daily life; be doer of the Word; minister to yourself--check your goals, aspirations and your conduct against Jesus' Commandment (John 14:15; 15:4-5)... and maintain a life of prayer, always asking God for His Love, Mercy and assistance; Jesus, promised that He is our place of repose: He will give us rest and He will take on our challanges! (Matthew 11:28-30) God Bless! Angel |

315 | N.A. or not? | Mark 4:20 | JCrichton | 145367
Hi, prayon! Many social events are frequented by a variety of people with as many religious beliefs... in a situation as described by worleybird72, there is much blame-projecting, unaccountability, and fear/antagonism against anything that seems accusatory... there's nothing more accusatory to human beings than Christ Jesus! (Isaiah 42:1-4) It is conceivable that if the poeple in the meeting desire so, worleybird72 may introduce not only Jesus' Name but an initial and ending prayer... yet, since it is he who can best guage the situation, he can keep himself in prayer-mode throughout the meet, repeating to himself the name of the God of the Amen! (Ultimately, that could prove to be a catalyst to an open manifestation of Christ, in the group, which will certainly change the heart and mind of as many as humbly open themselves to Him! (Luke 23:33-43) God Bless! Angel |

317 | N.A. or not? | Mark 4:20 | JCrichton | 145487
Hi, prayon! The problem is that many profess but few stand... Jesus said that anyone who would be ashamed of Him in front of man, He would be ashamed of him/her in front of His Father, in Heaven (Mark 8:38)... however, many wish to be "politically correct" and they avoid any issue that would testify that they are of Christ... We are not called by Jesus to shove testimonials or Scripture down anyone's throat... so we must be amiable in the way we present ourselves... this means that we must always gauge the environment/person that we are engaging in order to not create chaos/discord instead of enlightenment and hope! ...and I do not worry about getting Him into the conversation... for every Christian, this is nothing more than second nature... it is like getting up in the morning (we do not think about what to do, we simple go through a sequence of events that requires little or no alteration); Jesus is not something we put on but something we put in... we carry Him along wherever we go! God Bless! Angel |

319 | Did Jesue have any siblings? | Mark 6:3 | JCrichton | 107302
Well, I guess that we have learned all about Jesus and his parents: Could you explain to me (including Biblical references): a) How old was Joseph and was he never married, divorced or widowed, if previously married did he have any offsprings from that marriage? b) When Jesus was missing (age 12), where did his parents leave his younger siblings when they traveled each year to the Temple?, why was Jesus found alone--as any normal family younger brothers and sisters stick with the older ones (especially during Christ's era: better family unity than today!), why is there no mention of Mary leaving the other children with her relatives in order to look for Jesus? c) Jesus is mentioned as Mary's son--the other brothers and sisters are not labeled in the same manner--they are simply called Jesus' brothers and sisters, not Mary's other children. d) On the cross--did Jesus err or did He hate his brothers and sisters so much that He gave His mother away to one of His disciples (who happens to have a brother named James)?, should Jesus not have thought about His brothers and sisters being able to tend to His mother better than John?, did He not think that at least one of His brothers or sisters would be hurt by his decision? e) Would proving or disproving Mary's state (virgin; not a virgin), grant anyone absolution and forviness of sin, consequently salvation? God Bless! |

320 | Did Jesue have any siblings? | Mark 6:3 | JCrichton | 107326
Hi, Hank! My point exactly. Why do we seek to waste time speculating about things that serve no purpose? Though there are many chronoligal factors, the Bible is not a historical record book. And if we are to speculate, how troublesome would be our Lord's silent years (ages 12 through 30?)? There' s a movie out there depicting the Child Jesus performing miracles, etc... How it came to be?, don't know and frankly don't care! What I do know is that just before His first recorded miracle Jesus told His mother (paraphrase) What's it to me; it is not my time yet! So if Christ testifies that, as a grown adult, it was not His time to reveal Himself, why would He as a child perform miracles (basically parlor tricks for those who, as children themselves, would be witnessing them) that would bring Him to the attention of the whole village? Again, my intention was to refocus the attention of what we should be searching and striving for--speculation has lead to the History Channel's distorted accounts of the Bible's contents (i.e.: Jesus having kids with Mary; Lazarus being alive still; Jesus studying the various Assian religions to formulate His own teachings; Jesus being a schollar--not a simple carpenter; Jesus coming to America in the early 20th century, the list goes on...). Do I care about the answers to the posted questions? No!, knowing the answers would not add or substract from my religious belief. But if we (who are supposed to be spiritual) degrade our Forum, how can we demand any better from those who are not believers, those who are confused, those who are purposely seeking to confuse the novice? What wisdom should we be searching? Paul was quick to point it out for us: (1 Corinthians 1:21-31). God Bless! |
