does anyone know of any EASY to understand online biblical historical study materiel? I often read the O.T. have no clue whats going on, then I will hear a teaching that gives some background. Then I go back and read that section again and suddenly it makes a whole lot more sense. If I can picture it in my head I can make sense of it, but just reading sometimes I don't get a thing out of it :( Thanks Mike |

3 | Hebrew language? | Bible general Archive 3 | strts5 | 192715
2 Timothy 2:15 (King James Version) Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. I am definitely the ultra curious type and want to know everything, so I decided it may help to study the Old Testament to know, or at least get a fair understanding of the language (Hebrew). I found a website (hebrew4christians.com), is anyone familiar with it. The reason I ask is because it gets very deep very fast drawing out all kinds of parallels not only of scripture and individual words, but even individual letters. It is very fascinating, however is it accurate? Mike R ps In a post a couple of days ago about evolution it may have sounded like I was siding with evolutionist, I wasn't. I have friends who believe "big bang, evolution, etc organized by God. ie, Intelligent Design". My side , creation. |

Not a real question, and totally off topic, just wanted to share. "NEPAL'S troubled national carrier has taken a spiritual approach to recent maintenance troubles with one of its Boeing 757s by sacrificing two goats in front of the plane to appease a Hindu god." Mike R |

6 | Celebrate Recovery | Is 40:31 | strts5 | 192458
Any thoughts on this program, perhaps someone is familiar with it. I was also told by someone it does not give room to Christ to actually change a persons heart??? You can check for other things I've posted here and am still in the same place, I want to change but don't know how. I've "thrust" myself into church, prayer, being active in the body, but always end up backsliding. I am also fairly versed in the bible and no amount of head knowledge has helped much either. I'm thinking I need to submit myself to a good pastor, shut up, and just do what he asks. Eight Recovery Principles based on the BEATITUDES by Pastor Rick Warren Principle 1 - Realize I'm not God; I admit that I am powerless to control my tendency to do the wrong thing and my life is unmanageable. "Happy are those who know they are spiritually poor" Principle 2 - Earnestly believe that God exists, that I matter to him, and that he has the power to help me recover. "Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted" Principle 3 - Consciously choose to commit all my life and will to Christ's care and control. "Happy are the meek" Principle 4 - Openly examine and confess my faults to God, to myself, and to someone I trust. "Happy are the pure in heart" Principle 5 - Voluntarily submit to every change God wants to make in my life and humbly ask Him to remove my character defects. "Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what God requires" Principle 6 - Evaluate all my relationships; Offer forgiveness to those who have hurt me and make amends for harm I've done to others except when to do so would harm them or others. "Happy are the merciful" "Happy are the peacemakers" Principle 7 - Reserve a daily time with God for self examination, Bible readings and prayer in order to know God and His will for my life and to gain the power to follow His will. Principle 8 - Yield myself to God to be used to bring this Good News to others, both by my example and by my words. "Happy are those who are persecuted because they do what God requires" |

7 | Is 53:5 | Is 53:5 | strts5 | 217741
Young's Literal Translation Is 53:5 And he is pierced for our transgressions, Bruised for our iniquities, The chastisement of our peace is on him, And by his bruise there is healing to us. I'm sure this scripture has been discussed, does someone have an ID# before I ask a question. Thanks |

8 | salved? | Joel 2:32 | strts5 | 182883
I have popped in and out periodically of this site. Hopefully this isn't to far off topic, not being a "study" question. I grew up in the church but have been a very consistent backslider my whole life. Season hot, season cold, etc... for my whole life and I'm just past the thirty mark and do not wish to continue. I have always been a believer without question, it's settled in my heart. I try to tell myself that God is faithful to finish the work He began, however sometimes use this as an excuse to continue in a sinful behavior. I have heard it all from pastors and other Christians, baptism in the Holy Spirit, pray more, read the bible more do this, do that. I'm tired of screwing up, but I'm so good at it. I am the life of the party! I really do want to serve God. I day dream about it. I even think I'm called to ministry (don't laugh). I have had several people tell me through out my life that I am called, some well known preachers and evangelists from different denominations. I have argued with God about this many times, He always wins! At the same time I have a fear that I will stand before God and say I did this or that and He will say I never knew you. Any thoughts... constructive only please. |

9 | Carpenter or rabbi? | Matthew | strts5 | 204353
I'm sure this has been discussed before but could not find any posts dealing directly with it. Was Jesus a carpenter or a rabbi? Typically Rabbi's didn't have jobs (I think) and also Jesus was doing the will of the Father. Joseph wasn't his father. Joseph did raise him though. I don't know if this has a diffinitive answere, maybe just two schools of thought. |

11 | pride and ego | Matt 16:24 | strts5 | 193075
Mat 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25) For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For me right now in my life I take this to mean I need to die to my own ego and pride. Is there an easy way to do this? I have spent 30 years building it up and its painful to deal with, especially when I don't recognize what the true pride is that is so contrary to Christ. I'm pretty sure there is no shortcut, but if someone knows one... (wishful thinking). This is a recurring theme in my life and a lesson I want to learn and get over with (I know there will always be a little tug of war). Any thoughts are appreciated. Mike R. ps I love asking questions here, there is no one who knows me and gives biased answers based on personal relationship with me. |

12 | give and it shall be givin | Luke 6:38 | strts5 | 192832
In Luke chapter 6 is there a separation (or new thought) between verse 36 and 37? If so, can you read Luke 6:38 as a stand alone statement or do you need to include verse 37? Or for that matter not include verse 39-42. I just find it odd people people quote this verse by itself so often and really want to know. Looking for the Truth Mike R |

13 | Luke 10:1 | Luke 9:53 | strts5 | 215450
Luke 10:1 1Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. So Jesus sent out 70 people to 35 places He was planning on going. Jesus had a pretty tight schedule. Is it documented where all these people went and at which point in Jesus ministry this occurred? Was He already on His way to Jerusalem? |

15 | Pentacost | Acts 2:1 | strts5 | 204059
If you click on a thread, scroll to the bottom and you can see the entire thread. I'm listed as strts5 but I'm really Mike. Try that, should make more sense... Also on this thread I want to say more but don't have diffinitive evidence or greek understanding. I'll go ahead anyway and state "in my opinion" however don't in any way take it as Gospel, but it kinda makes sense. So here goes... Acts 2:1 ..."when the day of Pentacost had fully come"... may mean it was already day time and they were already at the Temple. Acts 2:3 ..."and it filled all the house"... House can mean both a home or the Temple and many other things, etc. etc. Acts 1:4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. So Jesus commanded them to go to Jerusalem but not nessecarily the upper room. Acts 1:13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode... Abode simply means to live, it does not say they didn't leave. Anyway, I "think" it is very possible and even probable they were already in the Temple when they reiceved the Holy Spirit. It would have deffinately made quite an impression. There are also some evidence this may have been the case if you look at the O.T. Read about the dedication of Solomon's Temple. Anyway I am definately up for critiquing and encourage it please. |

What specifically was the Gospel Paul preached and do we have a specific example of it in Scripture?
17 | 1 Timothy 6:3 | 1 Cor 9:19 | strts5 | 218243
Hi all, The church I have been attending has been involved with this stuff for quite sometime. It always bothered me, but I just blew it off, until this last week. My pastor asked me to read a book awhile ago (title withheld, E-mail me if you want the title) and I finally got around to reading it, or I should say what I could stomach! Over the last few days I have been researching the Emergent movement and Lectio Divina, then thinking more about the teachings of my church. Our web page has now taken down it's Statement of Faith and replaced it with a mission statement (not bad in and of itself). There is also a section on Lectio Divina complete with quotes to help you meditate, several of which are from Thomas Merton (google this guy). I am now starting to believe that false doctrines have crept into my church, but am unsure of how I should react biblicaly. Any scripture or advice would be appreciated. |

19 | Eph 5:26 | Eph 5:26 | strts5 | 221700
I went to a bible study recently and the pastor made a statement that really struck me. He said at salvation, you are saved, but your mind is not. It really made sense to me, and made many scriptures suddenly make more sense as well. I have been trying to make sense of the finished work at Calvary and renewing the mind, where if the work is finished why I must renew my mind with the word. I guess my question is, is your mind saved at the moment of salvation? |
