21 | Effect of Christian Universalism ? | John 14:6 | newoldstock | 92068
How do you feel about what I would call Christian Universalism creeping into the Mainline denominations? One year ago I left the UMC that I had been a member of for 20 years. The main reason was because both senior and associate pastors believed that everyone will go to heaven. What do you think. 1st. post.
22 | Are there other ways to salvation ? | John 14:6 | newoldstock | 107953
Are there any ways to salvation other than a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? This question keeps coming up in every church that I have attended. What about babies who die young, aborted babies, aborigines, remote pygmies in Africa, Godly Jewish folks, good Muslims, and so on and so on add infinitum? Help me with this. How do I answer grieving parents and Christ seekers? |

23 | How about the other sheep | John 14:6 | newoldstock | 107971
How about the other sheep that I mentioned in the question? If you were born in a Muslim or Jewish or Budist country, it is likely you will be one! In some cases you would be killed, etc. if you didn't follow Mom and Dad's religion. How about them? Hell for eternity?
24 | Is 'laying on of hands' necessary? | Acts 8:17 | newoldstock | 183419
12 But when they believed Philip, as he proclaimed the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. (A) 13 Then even Simon himself believed. And after he was baptized, he went around constantly with [a] Philip and was astounded as he observed the signs and great miracles (B) that were being performed. 14 When the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had welcomed God's message, they sent Peter and John to them. (C) 15 After they went down there, they prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For He had not yet come down on [b] any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (D) 17 Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. The Samaritans believed in the Gospel and in Jesus Christ. They were baptized 'only in the name of the Lord Jesus'. Isn't that enough? Why only when hands were laid on them did they receive the Holy Spirit? Is this applicable today? Thanks, Jim. |

25 | difference between salvation and sonship | Rom 8:16 | newoldstock | 101057
Can someone explain to us the difference between salvation and sonship that Ken Hepting keeps mentioning?
26 | How do we discipline church members? | 1 Cor 5:12 | newoldstock | 93405
This question is concerning a true event that was recently related to me and is not hypothetical. A woman told her husband, a church deacon, that she could not longer stand being married to him. She moved out and within two weeks moved in with another man. She continued to attend the church with the new boy friend. The pastor spoke to her about the unappropriateness of her continuing to attend church under the circumstances. She replied that she loved the church and the congregants and had no intention of leaving their fellowship. The minister next visited her with several other deacons to discuss the situation, but she still continued to attend services with her new man. Finally, the minister brought the situation up in a church service attended by the woman and the man, and she ran out the door in tears and never returned. These are the only details that I know. Was this the correct way to handle this? How would your congregation have handled it?
27 | Effect on a "Seekers" service? | 1 Cor 5:12 | newoldstock | 93429
Makarios, perhaps you are aware that Bill Hybles and the Willowcreek Church have what is called a "Seeker" service and have a "Followers" service on Wed. evenings. Might not many of the "Seekers" still be "living in sin"? My guess is that several of the "seekers" in this church are living together and not married. What effect would this scene have on them? Would it drive "Seekers" away from the Church, before they become born again "Followers"? I am not disagreeing with you. These questions have been asked of me concerning this situation. |

28 | Your thoughts on 40 Days of Purpose? | 2 Tim 4:2 | newoldstock | 158688
My UMC is preparing to start 40 Days of Purpose based on Rick Warren's book The Purpose Driven Life. I have some problems with the book. It has a lot of good stuff in it also, but the bad seems to out weigh the good. What do you think about this movement that is sweeping through many churches?
29 | Healing through prayer? | James 5:14 | newoldstock | 145612
James 5:14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call in the church elders (the spiritual guides). And they should pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Lord's name. James 5:15 And the prayer [that is] of faith will save him who is sick, and the Lord will restore him; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Is James talking about pysical or spiritual sickness in these verses? Or both? If you follow this proceedure, will you be pysically healed if it is God's will? |

30 | Does sin cause sickness? | James 5:14 | newoldstock | 145676
How come 5:15 links sins to sickness? Does sin cause sickness? Does healing sickness also heal sin and visa versa? And why would James say "if" when all have sinned and continue to sin? James 5:15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. |
