2 | Were not all Jews of Jesus's time either | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 96233
Godman, were not all Jews of Jesus's time either Pharisee or Saducee? The Pharisees believed in resurection but the Saducees did not. I believe that Jesus was probably raised as a Pharisee. The wealthiest class was the Saducees. See EdB's answer to my question. Jesus mainly disagreed with the Pharisees interpretation of the law.
3 | Informed opinions of the ESV please? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 97909
What are your informed opinions of the ESV now that you have had more opportunity to read and asess it? I have been using it lately after reading searched posts by the folks of this forum. I thank you for pointing me to it. I am very pleased with this translation. I never thought that I would move from the NKJ and the NIV, but the ESV is winning me over.
4 | Amen Hank. I have 33 bibles | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 97981
Amen Hank. I have 33 bibles (just counted them) and 5 commentaries, dictionaries, and concordances. I think that I often get so wrapped up in what is the best translation to study that I defeat my purpose and don't study enough. Instead I'm reading books like The King James Version Debate, New Age Versions, The Translation Debate, and The Complete Guide to Bible Versions. I'm addicted to finding the right version when I should be reading A Bible! The best Bible is Read! I have not read the HCSB, but as you can see by my exasperation, I probably will. I have only heard the rummor of a new NKJV here on this forum. Let's sell all of the Books that we don't use regularly and set up a StudyBible Forum Group cruise! Jim
5 | Which publish for profit ? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 98108
Ed, you bring up an interesting point. Which bible publishers publish for profit and which ones are not for profit? Which Bibles are published for marketability and sales and which ones for advancing God's Kingdom? How is the average "pew potato" to know which to purchase? BTW Most "Christian" book stores in my neck of the woods push the NIV. If you walk in one and are baffled by the cornicopia of bible assortments, most suggest the NIV. I have seen this happen many times. The NIV is now the best selling version followed by the King James. Does this indicate that most Christians do not know about the Zondervan promise or that they don't care? Is perhaps the product is more important than the publisher?
6 | Do you have any internet links? | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 98140
Ed, thanks for your detailed answer. Do you have any internet links where I could go to read about this Zondervan debacle? I heard a little about it several years back, but I am not real familiar with it.
7 | How do you evangelize someone who | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 100080
How do you evangelize someone who does not necessarily believe that the bible is the word of God; and they may not even believe that there is a God without any doubts? They pay no attention if you try to use the bible in your presentation.
8 | Will we have physical or spiritual bodie | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 101107
In the resurection in heaven will we have physical or spiritual bodies? How old do you think we will be? Do you think that we will recognize others?

10 | How did alter calls or invitations start | Bible general Archive 2 | newoldstock | 102624
Hey, brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. How was the alter call or invitation established in the church and is there any biblical reference for it? I have not found any thus far. Thanks, Jim.

12 | Did our first baptism 'not take'? | NT general Archive 1 | newoldstock | 183431
Did our first baptism 'not take'? Should we be baptised more than once? We have many denominations. Some emerse, which I believe is the best way. Some drip, drizzle, wet hand, or pour. If we were originally not emersed, and we change to a denomination that dunks, must we be baptised again by dunking to be qualified to join the church? Jim
13 | Why should I talk to my local congrega? | NT general Archive 1 | newoldstock | 183439
Let me change the question slightly then to why should a person be rebaptised? Why should I talk to my local congregation? Perhaps they are wrong. I see nothing in the bible, which is my authority, that says anyone should be baptised twice. The only case that I can find is Acts 19:1-7 and the first baptism was that of John.
14 | ESV Bible evaluations? | Leviticus | newoldstock | 146020
Now that everyone has had a chance to really use and study the ESV Bible, what is your conclusion? Back in 2002 there were some long threads on it discussing it's quality, long term use and survival as an alternative to the NIV,NKJV, and NASB. What are your more recent thoughts?
15 | "He shall be called a Nazarene."? | Matt 2:23 | newoldstock | 95216
I am doing a detailed bible study of Matthew and can not find a reference in the Old Testament for "He shall be called a Nazarene." The Amplified I notice says the ref. is Isa. 11:1 Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. I don't see how it can be the proper reference. I can't see how I could pull "He shall ge called a Nazanene" from Isa. 11:1. Do you know of any other reference?
16 | Even if the root word is branch, how did | Matt 2:23 | newoldstock | 95268
Thanks Emmaus. Amplified says in brackets "branch or Separated One". I think that separated one would be Nazarite. Such as one who has taken a Nazarite vow.I appreciate your help, but to me it looks like the commentators are really reaching out on a "thin branch" for this one. Even if the root word is branch, how did Matthew get "He shall be called a Nazarene" from "then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,And a branch from his roots will bear fruit."? Perhaps this quote is from a book that is missing or didn't make it into the Cannon. Jim
17 | I don't understand how we can interpret | Matt 2:23 | newoldstock | 95291
Ray, thanks. I agree with you about (Rod) and (He). I am convinced that Isaiah is prophesying about Jesus the Messiah. I don't understand how we can interpret that (branch) is (Nazarene). It almost seems like biblical scholars came up with this reference verse to make something fit when they could not find a direct match. God Bless. Jim
18 | Should a divorced person remarry? | Matt 5:31 | newoldstock | 92518
Should a divorced man or woman remarry? Mat.5:31-32 has perplexed me. I am married to a woman for 33 years now who was previously married and divorced for reasons other than unfaithfullness. We are Christians so I know that God has forgiven this "sin" (was it?), but do we continue to sin by remaining married? Would it be a greater sin to now divorce due to continuing to make each other Adulterers and Adulteresses?
19 | What is the meaning of Matthew 11:12? | Matt 11:12 | newoldstock | 93394
What is the meaning of Matthew 11:12? I have heard several theories, but it is a confusing verse for most. I'm am not so sure about the Amplified's brackets on this one. I am studying Mat. tonight and decided to ask you kind folks your interpretation. Many thanks. Jim.
20 | How do we discipline church members? | Matt 18:15 | newoldstock | 93408
This question is concerning a true event that was recently related to me and is not hypothetical. A woman told her husband, a church deacon, that she could not longer stand being married to him. She moved out and within two weeks moved in with another man. She continued to attend the church with the new boy friend. The pastor spoke to her about the unappropriateness of her continuing to attend church under the circumstances. She replied that she loved the church and the congregants and had no intention of leaving their fellowship. The minister next visited her with several other deacons to discuss the situation, but she still continued to attend services with her new man. Finally, the minister brought the situation up in a church service attended by the woman and the man, and she ran out the door in tears and never returned. These are the only details that I know. Was this the correct way to handle this? How would your congregation have handled it?
