NASB | 1 Samuel 4:3 When the people came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us take to ourselves from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of the LORD, that it may come among us and deliver us from the power of our enemies." |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Samuel 4:3 When the people (soldiers) came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD here from Shiloh, so that He may come among us and save us from the hand of our enemies." |
Subject: Whose glory is being sought? |
Bible Note: Ed, the reason this strikes a chord with me is because I have a dear friend who is angry and disappointed with/in God. Her daughter has suffered a great loss and my friend believes that God has treated her unfairly because her daughter has served Him faithfully over the years. We forget that our system of "justice" is often not God's! This misunderstanding may also contribute to bargaining with God too. I suspect we do this because we are blind to the other god we most often worship - self. |
