NASB | 1 Samuel 31:4 Then Saul said to his armor bearer, "Draw your sword and pierce me through with it, otherwise these uncircumcised will come and pierce me through and make sport of me." But his armor bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. So Saul took his sword and fell on it. |

Bible Question:
I am reading through a chronological bible and came upon the passage where Saul commits suicide, however I seem to be stuck on one thing in the passage. In 1 Samuel 31:3-6 and also 1 Chronicles 10:3-6 -They say basically the same thing- Saul's death and suicide is depicted. The story goes something like Saul is in battle, he has been wounded and knows he will be defeated. He asks his armor bearer to kill him so that he would not be put to shame being killed by a Phillistine. His armor beared is too afraid to do it, so Saul falls onto his own sword. Suicide, right? So then I was reading on and when David learns about Sauls death from the Amalekite in 2 Samuel 1:5-10 the bible recounts that the Amalekite killed Saul. -2 Samuel 1:5"How do you know that Saul and Jonathan are dead?" David demanded. 6The young man answered, "I happened to be on Mount Gilboa. I saw Saul there leaning on his spear with the enemy chariots closing in on him. 7When he turned and saw me, he cried out for me to come to him. 'How can I help?' I asked him. 8And he said to me, 'Who are you?' I replied, 'I am an Amalekite.' 9Then he begged me, 'Come over here and put me out of my misery, for I am in terrible pain and want to die.' 10"So I killed him," the Amalekite told David, "for I knew he couldn't live. Then I took his crown and one of his bracelets so I could bring them to you, my lord."- So my question is this...what happened? It plainly states that the armor bearer killed himself when he saw that Saul was dead...so did the Amalekite kill Saul with the armor bearer as witness? Or did the armor bearer think Saul was dead and kill himself before the Amalekite discovered Saul. Anyone have an idea? Thanks! :o) |
