Bible Question: Do we know what the word "know" ment in Hebrew at this time? |
Bible Answer: Greetings br2rns! The Hebrew word used in this verse is yada. It is also used in Gen 4:1 - Adam had relations (knew) his wife . . . this knowing is suggestive of intimacy; we might consider from this usage that knowing God refers to a spiritual intimacy. Most people know about God, but lack a relationship with Him. Samuel did not YET know the Lord. The word usage here suggests that knowing the Lord would take place. Again, the word yet is used in conjunction with God revealing Himself. We have no excuse - for not only does God want to be known, He reveals Himself to us (Romans 1) Note that it was the Lord who called Samuel (no one seeks after God on their own but it is God who seeks us!) God reveals Himself. Nothing has changed since this encounter and each of us has a choice to respond to the call of the Lord as Samuel did (Speak for your servant listens v 10)or we can go back to bed. From this I learn that God desires relationship with us and He reveals Himself to us in order to facilitate our response. God wants to be known, not just known about . . . God desires intimacy with us. How about you, do you "know" the Lord? Is your relationship with Him "intimate?" Blessings, mommapbs |
