AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Samuel 17:55 ¶ When Saul saw David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner the captain of the army, "Abner, whose son is this young man?" And Abner answered, "By your life, O king, I do not know." |
Bible Question:
Now the scripture says plainly . . . 1 Sam 16:21(NIV) So David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armorbearer. 22Then Saul sent to Jesse, saying, "Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight." Which Jesse allows. But I find shortly thereafter in the next chapter when David was going out against the Philistine Giant, that Saul asks this question of General Abner, "whose son is this youth?" And Abner responds, "I do not know." Then, as David returns frim his lone battle with the Giants bloody head in his hands, General Abner escourts him before The King who looking on this "youth" that "occasionally went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem." (verse 15) (remember, David had become Sauls armour bearer) Saul asks him, "Whose son are you, young man?" Saul did not know his OWN armour Bearer? and even more so General Abner the man in Charge of the Kings safety, did not know this young man that occasionally was in the kings presents, both as a Harp Consultant, and as his Armour Bearer? . . . Really? In the next chapter it says that when the distressing spirit from God came . . .So David played music with his hand, as at other times; leading me to believe this harping thing was an on going service to the king. Something just does not click here. What am I missing? |
Bible Answer: Greetings, eebco! Here's a good quote that helps explain this verse a bit better.. "17:55 whose son is this young man? The seeming contradiction between vv. 55-58 and 16:14-23 may be resolved by noting that prior to this time David was not a permanent resident at Saul's court (see v.15; 18:2; see also note on 16:21), so that Saul's knowledge of David and his family may have been minimal. Further, Saul may have been so incredulous at David's courage that he was wondering if his family background and social standing might explain his extraordinary conduct."
