AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Samuel 1:1 There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of the hill country of Ephraim, named Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. |
Bible Question:
Samuel was an Ephraimite (of the tribe of Ephraim). Yet, we see him ministering before the LORD in the Tabernacle. His famous vision comes to him while he is sleeping where the Ark of the LORD is. He is clearly in the Tabernacle and serving in some way (with a linen ephod) in the Tabernacle. My question is why? He isn't from the line of Aaron, so my understanding is that he shouldn't be in the Tabernacle itself. He is also not of the tribe of Levi, so he shouldn't be serving as a help either. I understand that Israel was corrupt at this point and pretty much nothing was being done right, but this was God's chosen servant (soon to be). Any comments? BTW, I am "listening" my way through the history books and I might have some questions like this for a while. They may be minor, but of interest to me none the less. MJH |
Bible Answer: Dear MJH; a good set of books is the Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the bible. They can be purchased for about 50-60 dollars and there are five volumes. I read up on the priesthood and found that the requirements given by Moses to Aaron and his sons may have been primarily while they were wandering in the wilderness. After Aaron's death the words Levites and priests became synomous. As Keily has already stated Samuel was from the priestly line. One good thing about these volumes is you can read each name and a desciption of them and their ancestors. Most valuable in my reading this topic is the following: Influence of OT priesthood on Christian Doctrine - The Levitical priesthood and the sacrifical system in which it operated, found their fulfillment and perfection in Christ. In the NT, Christ is the High Priest, Hebrews, Romans 3:25. He is the great High Priest, eternally one with the Father, Hebrew 1; identified with man in Incarnation, Hebrews 2:14-18; 4:15; 5:1, 8-10. He is the mediator of the new covenant 7:23-28; 8:6-13; 9:15, perfecting eternal redemption, 9:11-28; 10:11-18 and assuring His people of constant access to God 10:19-25. Moveover, all of God's people are priests in the NT 1 Peter 2:5, 9, Romans 12:1, Hebrews 13:15, Revelation 1:5. Two vital elements were transmitted to the NT teaching: the doctrine of priestly mediation and the priestly hierarachy. The Epistle to the Hebrews builds on the teaching of the effectual high priesthood of Christ. Ministry in the Church has replaced the ancient God-ordained hierarchy. - C. L. Feinberg Sincerely, Val |
