Bible Question: what is it so special about the cross? 1cor 1:17 |
Bible Answer: Greetings, 1 Cor. 1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. Paul in this verse wants to instill upon those hearing the message of the gospel that God’s salvation resides in what God did for the lost in the person of His Son Jesus the Christ on the cross. He wanted it to be known that God did the work and not have one be convinced because he was an aliquant speaker who convinced them of something that they really didn’t have. It's not because Paul said it, it’s because God actually did it and we are to believe, or rely on, the fact that our redemption is assured by the work that was finished on the cross. John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. (Bible Knowledge Commentary) Paul’s primary charge was to preach the gospel (9:16) not with words of human wisdom. Brilliantly persuasive eloquence may win a person’s mind but not his heart, whereas the unadorned words of the gospel, though seemingly foolish by human standards, are made effective by the Spirit of God (2:4-5).
