Bible Question: My Women's Study Leader uses 'revelation' quite often stating we get revelation from God: what is the difference in revelation, illumination and inspiration? I feel funny inside hearing revelation used when I always heard this was God to the Prophets and Apostles. Does He not illuminate our minds to understand the Word or am I being overly cautious? |
Bible Answer: I agree with the previous post, that people will make the words say what they want them to say out of ignorance or purpose. But a quick and dirty definition of the three words from a Conservative Protestant theology would be as follows Revelation is from God. The Bible is God's revealed will. (We could mention the Book of Revelation, which is the Apocalypse, or unveiling of the future. Revelation means unveiling.) Inspiration is the method God used to share his revealed will to the authors of Scripture. Illumination is where we are at. As we read God's Word the Spirit of God illuminates our minds to his Word. When we turn on a light the room is illuminated. As we read Scripture the Holy Spirit illuminates our minds. Hope this helps |
