Bible Question: is the name jehovah in the greek or hebrew text |
Bible Answer: Jehovah is an invented name. It was believed to have been created by Tyndale back in the 1500's. It was created by adding the vows of latin word Adonni which speaks of God to the Hebrew tetragram YHWH. Remember in Latin the Y is sounded like the English J as does the W sound like V so some assume Tyndale added the traded the Y for a J and the V for the W Hebrew originally was written without vowels making it impossible for us to know how words were exact pronounced. There is some recent evidence that when the vowel points were added to the written Hebrew by the Masoretes that the Tetragram was transformed into Yehovah. However many scholars maintain the original YHWH was left unchanged. In any case the Hebrew reader would never pronounce the word. Even today most Jewish writers use G-d instead of writing the word God. |
