Bible Question: In Jn 19:33,34 they pierced His side. Why would they have pierce His side when in [V33] He was already dead. That doesn't make any sence. |
Bible Answer: The sabbath was approaching and the soldiers came to break the legs of the men that were crucified. This was to prevent them from pushing up with their feet so they could breathe. They would then suffocate. Hanging from their arms with no way to relieve the pressure of their body weight collapsing the lungs. Jesus gave up His Spirit and died before the time to break the legs. The soldier pierced Jesus' side in order to prove that he was in fact already dead not to kill Him. John 19:30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. John 19:31 Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. John 19:32 So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; John 19:33 but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. John 19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. John 19:35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. John 19:36 For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, "NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN." John 19:37 And again another Scripture says, "THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED." |
