Bible Question: Does it say someplace in the Bible that, "God helps those who help themselves?" |
Bible Answer: Starhigh: No, "God helps those who help themselves" is not in Scripture. It is one of those "phantom verses" which, along with others such as "Cleanliness is next to godliness, have made their way into the canon of folk-lore, but they are not in the canon of Scripture. Actually Scripture teaches the opposite. Consider Jeremiah 17:5: "Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD." The idea that God helps those who help themselves is works-based doctrine. It is not a doctrine of God's grace, a doctrine that clearly is taught in the New Testament: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." (Ephesians 2:8). --Hank |
