Bible Question:
I know the Bible does not contradict itself, but I am have trouble understanding two different verses in Genesis. Gen 10:5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations. Notice the dividion was of lands, tongue, and families. My question is concerning the tongue. Now notice my next verse, which is in the future from this verse. Gen 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. Have the people advanced into one language or is Genesis 10:5 speaking of something else? |
Bible Answer: The people were of one language and the verse you refer to (Gen.10:5) and particularly "were separated into their lands" refers to that which God did as told in Gen.11:1. As I see it the children of Noah married and reproduced and grew and spread from the east and at a certain point the events of Chapter 11 occurred. The above referenced passage (were separated...) recognized this event. It is not necessarily so that every chapter in a Book is chronologically progressive. Or for that matter every verse or paragraph within a chapter. |
