NASB | Judges 8:24 Yet Gideon said to them, "I would request of you, that each of you give me an earring from his spoil." (For they had gold earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Judges 8:24 And Gideon said to them, "I would make a request of you, that each one of you give me an earring from his spoil." For the Midianites had gold earrings, because they were Ishmaelites [who customarily wore them]. |
Bible Question: In Judges 8:24 it mentioned the Ishaelites. I can't understand what Ishmael was mentioned and is this the decendents of Ishmael, Isaacs brother? |
Bible Answer: I don't read it as Ishmael but rather Ishmaelites. Gideon is asking for golden earrings taken in plunder after the battle. It was the custom of Ishmaelites to wear gold earrings. The author may have felt that Ishmaelites were more well known for wearing earrings than the Midianites. Ishmael was born over 1000 years before this event and these are his descendants. |
