Bible Question:
Good afternoon! I have a query that I was hoping y'all could help me with. A friend of mine is in a tough situation, and what I'm looking for is someone who can point me to Scripture to help guide me through explaining the dangers of what is going on in his life. Here's the situation. He recently began dating a woman who was married for about two years, and who separated from her husband this past Christmas. In other words, the divorce is not yet final -- it's still in process. From the getgo I had a problem with this because, as far as I was and am concerned, the fact that she's not yet divorced means that she's still married. When I mentioned this to him, he pointed out to me that her husband had committed adultery, which is part of what led to the divorce, and he pointed me to a Scripture that somehow I currently can't locate, talking about the fact that if a man is unfaithful, then the woman is free from the marriage. He has taken this verse to mean that since his girlfriend's husband was with another woman, she is free to do whatever she wants, regardless of whether or not the divorce process is done. In my opinion, what this means is that the woman is free to divorce her husband, which she is doing, not free to start another relationship while still married to him. I have sought the help of many people in the ministry about this topic, and have been told many reasons why, practically, this isn't the world's most intelligent situation to get into. I have also been told that this "goes against Scripture" but what I really need in order to be effective in my ministry to my friend is someone who is willing to help point me to some exact verses that explain that this is wrong behavior. Hopefully some help will be able to be given. Thank you for your time. Blessings Kat If you could email me at theroyalkitty@yahoo.com it would be appreciated. |
Bible Answer: These may be some scriptures you were after. Matthew 5:32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery. Matthew 19:9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery." Romans 7:2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. |
