Bible Question: What is the extent of the parallel between Adam and Christ? |
Bible Answer: In 1 Corinthians 15:22, we see the parallel between Adam and Christ come to a 'head' or conclusion. Adam, through his sin, brought death to the human race. Both Adam and Christ were human, but Christ brought life to humanity through His resurrection. The 'descendants' of Christ will be 'made alive' (Gal 3:26,29; 4:7; Eph 3:6; Acts 20:32; Titus 3:7), and the 'descendants' of Adam (or sin) will face eternal punishment (Matt 5:29; 10:28; 25:41,46; Luke 16:23; 2 Thess. 1:9; Rev. 20:15). Adam passed to all his descendants the inherent sinful nature he possessed because of his first disobedience. That nature is present from the moment of conception (Ps 51:5). When Adam sinned, all mankind sinned in his loins (Romans 5:18, Heb 7:7-10). However, Christ's one act of redemption was immeasurably greater than Adam's one act of condemnation. "Romans 5:15-21 In this passage Paul explores the contrasts between the condemning act of Adam and the redemptive act of Christ. They were different in their effectiveness (v. 15), their extent (v. 16), their efficacy (v. 17), their essence (vv. 18,19), and their energy (vv. 20,21)." The MacArthur NKJV Study Bible |
