Bible Question: What does it mean, according to the BIBLE to make a covenent with the Lord? Are we to make covenants with Him? |
Bible Answer: A covenant is a formal agreement between two parties with each assuming some obligation. It can be between people, countries, or between God and His people. In biblical times two people would make a covenant by cutting an animal in half placing each half on different sides of a ditch. The two parties would then walk arm and arm through the "river of blood". Marriage is a covenant between two people signified by the vows and the ring being the symbol of that covenant. You can read about other covenants by reading about Laban and Jacob (Gen 31:44-54) or David and Jonathan (1Sam 18:3, 23:18). Covenants were given the highest respect. They were not broken. When Jesus died on the cross it was the end of the old covenant which God made with Abraham. We are now under the new covenant. It is a covenant where God has promised to take care of us and give us eternal life and in exchange we devote our lives to Him and do His work. When we are saved we automatically enter into that covenant. |
