Bible Question:
A God conundrum... Is God all powerful? Can God do anything S/He wants? Can God do anything Man can do? Can God commit Sin? Can God do evil? How can God Sin, or do evil, if S/He is all good? How is it NOT a contradiction? If God cannot Sin, or do evil, then dosen't that mean S/He is not all powerfull? If God cannot commit evil, then dosen't that imply that Man is able to do something God is not? If God CAN commit Sin or do evil, how do we know S/He dosen't? If God cannot do certain things, how do we know what S/He can do? I know I have asked several questions, but it is a line of inquery that has been troubling me as of late. Any help or guidance that might resolve these questions would help- be it this religion, or another. thanks in advance Clark |
Bible Answer: To answer this question one must know what sin is. Sin is any lack of conformity to or transgression of the law of God. There is no law above God. In giving the law, God was not handing down to man something that was binding upon himself. Man by law is accountable to God. God is accountable to no one. There is no law binding him to obedience, and no law above him. He answers to no one. Ps 115:3 But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases. The only thing the God of truth (Ps. 31:5) cannot do is lie. (Titus 1:2) God is righteous, apart from any internal or external standard of righteousness. He is not righteous because of anything, and nothing constrains him to be righteous, and there is nothing toward which he strives to maintain his righteousness. Just as he is the "I am that I am," he is righteous because he is righteous. God cannot sin, because whatever God does is right. Let me put it in the negative, no matter what God does, it is right. What is right is determined by what God does, not by some internal or external law. He is absolute sovereign and he does whatever he pleases. To deny that God's law to man is arbitrary is to bind God by a law and make him subject to it. God cannot do nonsense. He cannot be God and non-God. He cannot be and not be. Can God do anything man can do? No, because for God there is no law. Therefore he cannot sin. God knows all things. Therefore he cannot claim ignorance. God is all-wise. Therefore he cannot make stupid mistakes. These inabilities are not contrary to omnipotence. They are contraries to nonsense. Peace, |
