Bible Question: What is a good way to study and understand the book of Revelations? |
Bible Answer: I suggest Joseph A Siess "The Apocalypse" It is a Zondervan Classic written in the 1800's and full of scholarly workmanship. He qoutes many resources and brings out many scriptures to compare the visions of Revelation with like phrases and visions in the Old Testament. The big picture truth streams he follows is in line with the Whole Bible and you will bear witness to the truth of many of the applications. I do not think you will agree 100 percent with any book on eschatalogy, however this one will go a long way in helping to follow a pattern of letting the bible interpret itself with no outside sources necessary. As a matter of fact as soon as you see how Seiss uses other passages of the Bible to bring out the truths in the first few chapters of Revelation you could quit reading the book and find the answers yourself by continueing to compare scripture with scripture. It does requir having a handle on doctrine as believed by the early disciples and even the Jews of godly understanding concerning the promises they held so dear such as The Kingdom to come, inheritance of the earth to the godly, a coming man of sin, resurrection of the dead, judgement to come, and other important fundamental doctrines. Without understanding what they believed on these truths you will not see the big picture revealed in Revelation. |
