Bible Question:
Many churches sustain that are the followers of the primary century church; but they have so different doctrines. So, which were the first Christians'doctrines? Crin |
Bible Answer: Greetings Crin! There are two ways to answer this question. 1) Everything in the Bible is inluded in the doctrines of the early church! This sounds like a silly answer, but it is true. If we want to know what the early church believed, we simply have to look at what the Bible teaches. 2) We can look at the earliest creeds. The earliest that I am aware of is the Apostle's Creed. The old Roman version says: 1) I believe in God the Father Almighty; (2) And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; (3) Who was born of (de) the Holy Ghost and of (ex) the Virgin Mary; (4) Crucified under Pontius Pilate and buried; (5) The third day He rose again from the dead, (6) He ascended into Heaven, (7) Sitteth at the right hand of the Father, (8) Whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. (9) And in the Holy Ghost, (10) The Holy Church, (11) The forgiveness of sins; (12) The resurrection of the body. Whether or not this was actually written by the Apostles is up for debate, but it is a very old statement since it is quoted by Tertullian in about 200 a.d. Most Christian churches basically believe in the same doctrines as the early church. The problem is that over the years there have been some variations in some doctrines. However, the differences between most denominations doctrinally is somewhat overblown. Christians agree far more than we disagree. It's just that our disagreements get more press! :-) I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
