Bible Question:
WHAT FAST DO I DO FOR A CRISIS DEALING WITH MY FINANCES |
Bible Answer: Dear CHARCE3, Welcome to the forum! Financial crises have their origin in something other than service to God -- generally they come as a result of unwise use of our God-given resources. Of course, it is possible that if you fast from eating expensive foods, there could be a consequence that might positively effect the state of your pocketbook. However, I am afraid that you are making a causal connection that simply doesn't exist. God is not obligated to us by our service to Him. Indeed, He owes us nothing. When His blessings flow, they do so out of His loving kindness. His worthy of our worship even if He never blessed us at all. Furthermore, we do not accrue benefits by worship. Scripture repeatedly states that God is far more interested in the motives of our heart than in what we do, in obedience to His commands than in our sacrifices, in contrition than in good works. You see, God's objective is not to make us comfortable on this earth. If it were His objective, believe me, we'd all be a lot more comfortable! By the same token, neither is it God's objective to make us miserable. If it were His objective, believe me, son, you and I would have a lot more problems than just with money! God's objective is to conform us into the image of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 8:29). He doesn't want or need our time, resources, activities, or words. What He wants -- and what He deserves -- is everything, right down to and including our very lives. I'm afraid any other advice to you would be rooted in legalism or simple superstition. With all this in in mind, your question reminds me of a quote -- one from which we might all benefit! "Do you fast? Give me proof of it by your works. If you see a poor man, take pity on him. If you see a friend being honored, do not envy him. Do not let only your mouth fast, but also the eye and the ear and the feet and the hands and all the members of our bodies. Let the hands fast, by being free of avarice. Let the feet fast, by ceasing to run after sin. Let the eyes fast, by disciplining them not to glare at that which is sinful. Let the ear fast, by not listening to evil talk. Let the mouth fast from foul words and unjust criticism. For what good is it if we abstain from birds and fishes, but bite and devour our brothers? May He who came to the world to save sinners strengthen us to complete the fast with humility, have mercy on us and save us." --John Chrysostom In Him, Doc |
