Bible Question: I have heard that when Jesus said what He said to the church about being neither hot nor cold, He was referring to two rivers which flow together near Laodicea, one being cold water, the other being warm. Any knowledge of such a thing - knowledge that can be verified, rather than simply repeated from what "someone" else said? Thanky. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Sherwoodbiblefellowship@juno.com, Actually, one of Laodicea's major weaknesses was a lack of an adequate water supply. (1) I do not know of any two rivers that Christ could or would be referring to in Revelation 3:15-16, even while keeping in mind that this is apocalyptic literature. Jesus is speaking of the spiritual status of the church in Laodicea. Laodicea's lack of a water supply could be seen as a major drawback, since there would be no connection to the hot, medicinal waters of nearby Hierapolis (1), and there would be no way for the "sickness" to be carried away in a 'cold stream,' so that there would be spiritual refreshment. (1) Loosely taken from the commentary of Revelation 3:15,16: Zondervan NASB Study Bible, 1999, Zondervan Corporation, pg. 1853 |
