NASB | 1 John 5:16 ¶ If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask and God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should make request for this. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 John 5:16 ¶ If anyone sees his brother committing a sin that does not lead to death, he will pray and ask [on the believer's behalf] and God will for him give life to those whose sin is not leading to death. There is a sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for this [kind of sin]. |
Bible Question:
The small group Bible study I am involved in, is about to discuss the following two verses. I would appreciate the various opinions concerning the questions I will ask concerning these two verses, from as many of you as possible. I did a community search on this but did not see all these questions answered, which I believe are necessary in order to get a correct understanding of what is meant by these verses. 1 John 5:16-17 If any man see his brother sin a sin [which is] not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. My questions concerning these two verses are as follows 1) Who is the intended audience of 1 John? 2) Is the death mentioned in these two verses physical or spiritual? 3) Is the word "brother" in verse 16 refer to a believing brother - yes or no? 4) what is this "sin unto death" refer to? 5) Is the article "a" before the word "sin" found in the Greek? Love and peace to you |
Bible Answer: Greetings new creature, 1John was not written to any particular person or church. It was sent as a pastorial letter to several Gentile congregations as well as all believers everywhere. It was written by John about 85-90 AD. Commentators differ widely in their thoughts whether this is a spiritual or physical death. The contrst to the phrase "there is sin leading to death" with "there is sin not leading to death" signifies that the writer distinguishes between sins that lead to a physical death and those that do not. That is not to identify a certain kind of mortal or not mortal sin, but to say not all sins are so judged by God. John, in this verse, was refering to those who had left the Christian fellowship and joined the antichrists. This situation, I believe, refers to the spiritual death since once they went against Christ they had lost their way to salvation. I could not find any conclusive evidence whether the "brother" is a believer or not. However, I believe that it is refering to a believer since we are told to watch over our brothers in Matt., (Sorry couldn't fnd the verse). There are a number of interpretations of what "sin unto death" means. The most common view is that which sees the sin unto death as the sin of a Christian which results in physical death rather than spiritual death. (1Cor 11:30). Sin unto death" could be any premeditated and unconfessed sin that causes the Lord to determine to end a believer's life. It is not one particular sin like lying or homosexuality, but whatever sin is the final one in the tolerance of God. Failure to repent of and forsake sin may eventually lead to physical death as judgement of God(Acts5:1-11; 1Cor 5:5;11:30). As for you last question I will leave that to someone else - I have no idea... (ref: Life Appl Bible; MacArthur Study Bible; Everyman's Bible Commentary) prayon |
