Bible Question:
I would appreciate any insight and/or other scripture references that might help me understand this scripture better. I am interested in 1 John 2:15-17. Specifically the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye, and the pride of life. Thank You, JAL |
Bible Answer: Greetings. Take a look at Gen 3:6. "When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; . . ." Do you see the "lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life here?!! For more insight, read the notes associated with this verse. Imo, when we love the world in this manner, we love from the flesh, from our carnal sin nature. (See Romans 7-8) We are to love God above all else (Mt 22:37). When we love God, we will respond to the world and to others in the same way that God does. "For God so loved the world . . ." For it is Christ in us who loves; we are but the conduit. Imo, all too often, sin plugs up the holes that God desires to flow through! Imo, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life is the same as loving the world or the things of the world ahead of God. When it's all about me, or all about you, instead of God, it is sin. The original sin was pride; all else flows from this. Both sin and pride have "i" in the center! When we choose to love from our heart (see Dt 30:6, Ez 36:26), from our spirit in Union with Christ, we will love as God desires (Apart from Me, you can do nothing John 15:5) and bring glory to Him.
