NASB | 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 John 1:9 If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just [true to His own nature and promises], and will forgive our sins and cleanse us continually from all unrighteousness [our wrongdoing, everything not in conformity with His will and purpose]. |
Bible Question: If the clear context of 1John chapter 1 is a refutation of the Gnostic heresy and a condensed version of the conversion experience 1John 1:9 why are pastors still preaching confession for "forgiveness" of the forgiven(those in Christ) in church. Confession is for the submission of our mind(will) to God realizing that we have strayed from His perfect leading but we have no condemnation if I read Romans correctly. |
Bible Answer: Maybe 1 John 1:9 isn't a condensed version of the conversion experience. Note John does say "we", why is he not including himself? It seems to me that the issue at hand is not conversion, but rather fellowship. If we sin, we are out of fellowship with Him. Once our sin is acknowledged and forgiven, our fellowship is restored. |
