NASB | Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating as far as the division of the soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart. |
Bible Question: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SOUL AND THE SPIRIT? DO ANIMALS HAVE A SOUL AND A SPIRIT? |
Bible Answer: We know from the new testament that there is at least some sort of a distinction between soul and spirit based on Heb. 4. If they can be divided then they are different. The hebrew and greek words though, that translate to the english words soul and spirit have different connotations. The hebrew word that is translated soul, 'nephesh' refers to the whole immaterial man. See Gen 2:7 spirit, soul, mind, heart, conscience, etc. The New Testament word, 'psyche' (from whence we get english words like psycholgoy) has a much more express meaning, although not all together consistently, of mind. The greek word, 'pneuma' which is translated spirit here in Hebrews has a meaning of the immaterial part of man created expressly in the Image of God, entirely nonphysical, and eternal. royfish |
