Subject: How does God speak to us? |
Bible Note: We can only speak to the hear and now... Sooner or later someone says, "Paul handled it this way..." or "Peter did this..." Yes, the apostles were to live as Christ lived. But the apostolic age is over, and God does has seen fit to deliver us their writings in the Scriptures. It takes a great deal of hubris to claim equivalent status with an apostle. Seems to me that if folks would pay attention to what the Scripture says, instead of looking for some kind of experience, they'd have a more sure guide of what the Holy Spirit is telling them to do. Of course, knowing the Word takes intellectual sweat. I rather prefer how the old divines put it: The whole counsel of God concerning all things necessary for his own glory, man's salvation, faith and life, is either expressly set down or necessarily contained in the Holy Scripture: unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelation of the Spirit, or traditions of men. Nevertheless, we acknowledge the inward illumination of the Spirit of God to be necessary for the saving understanding of such things as are revealed in the Word, and that there are some circumstances concerning the worship of God, and government of the church, common to human actions and societies, which are to be ordered by the light of nature and Christian prudence, according to the general rules of the Word, which are always to be observed. (2 Timothy 3:15-17; Galatians 1:8,9; John 6:45; 1 Corinthians 2:9-12; 1 Corinthians 11:13, 14; 1 Corinthians 14:26,40) That is balance: Scripture, Holy Spirit, light of reason... these three working together. |
