Bible Question:
I John 2:6, "He that saith he abideth in him [Jesus] ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked." James 3:13b, "Let him [a wise man] show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom." Jesus' followers are to conduct themselves as Jesus walked, and are to speak of their works with meek wisdom. Proverbs 10:19, "In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin; but he that refraineth his lips is wise." Matthew 12:36, "But I [Jesus] say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement." Titus 2:1-6 instructs "young men," "older men," "young women," and "older women" to be "sober." Webster's Dictionary, "chat n. light, informal talk." Jesus is always quoted in Scripture to have spoken concisely, directly, and entirely germane to the agenda of His Father. He never is shown to have spoken upon any one topic for more than a few minutes. Jesus never chatted. The question therefore comes, "Should Jesus' followers, i.e. those who are supposed to 'walk as he [Jesus] walked,' ever chat? Remember, the answer to this and to every other question of Christian conduct should be answered with the contents of Scripture, and not with the intuitive notions of popular human culture. |
Bible Answer: Hello JoReba, Welcome to the Forum. I have to ask, with all due respect what leads you to ask this question? I will offer this. Keep in mind scripture is a "summary" of what Jesus, and his disciples said. Speaking about inspiration, Dr. David Wells says, "... the Holy Spirit was able to work through the individuality of the author in such a way that what the author intended to convey and did convey corresponds exactly to what God wanted to convey." There is no directive in scripture aginst chat per se. Rather, we are implored in Col. 4:6 to, "Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person."
