Bible Question:
Over the years I've been able to aquire resources to build a good basic research library. I would like to expand and add to what I already have. I feel like its time to raise the bar where my studies are concerned. I would greatly appreciate any tips or leads anyone would recomend. In Christ, lionheart |
Bible Answer: Lionheart: These are my recommendations. REFERENCE BOOKS I USE [] A good English dictionary [] Baker Theological Dictionary of the Bible (Edited by Walter Elwell) [] Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Dictionary. A good Bible dictionary will provide you with more information than you will find in a study Bible. [] Strong's Concordance. I use the one with Large Print. [] Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words [] The Amplified Bible. I can't imagine doing Bible study without this book. STUDY BIBLES I USE [] In your personal library, make sure you include a classic reference Bible with center column or marginal references, including cross references and translators' notes. Which Bible version you pick is up to you. For a literal version (word-for-word vs. thought-for-thought translation) , I recommend the New American Standard Bible, the New King James Bible, and the English Standard Version. There are other good word-for-word translations, but these are the ones I am familiar with. [] The Scofield Bible. This comes in several different editions and Bible translations. The one I prefer is the New Scofield Reference Bible, KJV, Oxford, 1967. [] The Ryrie Study Bible. It has been called the Scofield Bible for the twentieth century. [] The MacArthur Study Bible. This is my favorite study Bible and the one I use the most, virtually every day for the past seven years. [] The Harper Study Bible. This is a superb study Bible, evangelical, conservative in orientation. (NOTE: I do not recommend the Harper-Collins Study Bible, an entirely different book.) [] The Life Application Study Bible. This one is especially good for new Christians and people who are new to reading the Bible. [] The NET Bible, which contains translators' notes explaining WHY the translators made the translation decisions that they did. You can sample this one online or download and print it for FREE. The complete Bible text and notes are included in the online version, which is identical to the print version. For more information on any of the above recommendations, just ask. Grace to you, Kalos |
