Bible Question: How many layers of meaning does the Bible have? I count three: literal, types, and shadows (being types with prophetic fulfillment). We know it is more than one because Paul said "Is it about oxen that the Lord is concerned?" (1 Cor 9:9) |
Bible Answer: Helsrisen, The answer partially depends upon the approach one takes to interpreting scripture. I hold to a Literal, Historical-Grammatical approach. This includes context and the authors' intended meaning. So, scripture therefore has one meaning. Perhaps you'referring to the Allegorical approach? With this the alegorical meaning came to be viewed by some as the highest meaning of a passage. This appraoch was dominant in the early church for the first several centuries. You'd have to be more specific in providing details as to how you arrive at your "three layers". I'm missing the significance of 1 Cor. 9:9? What leads you to ask this question?
