Bible Question: In Hebrews 13:5-6, the Bible states "be content with what you have". I am little confused because I was told that God always want more of you. You should always have goals set high because God does. |
Bible Answer: Hi, Nakia! I think that you are confusing two terms... True God demands that we become active servants (as the parable of the coins--Matthew 25:14-30); yet it is not material wealth that He demands that we engage in acquiring! (Matthew 6:19-21) Paul commends himself when he preached during his mission at Corinth (1 Corinthians 9:3-23) and he warns that those who do not work should not eat (2 Thessalonians 3:6-15)... Yet, neither Jesus nor Paul is saying that if a person does not strive to be wealthy (material gains) he/she is not a disciple... in the case of Jesus, He is speaking in terms of spiritual gain; in the case of Paul, he is speaking against freeloaders, who were like leeches sucking the life out of the early Church (where the Christian community deposited their individual goods for the communal distribution), and the "preachers" that would make evangelization a for-profit enterprise... There are people on Public Service because their health or their particular situation impedes them from getting gainful employment--they do not cease to be children of God... conversely, there are wealthy people who live wretched lives because they reject God's Authority or because they judge themselves more spiritual than those who cannot afford their lifestyles... Jesus made it a point that God sees the content of the heart rather than the outward appearance! (Mark 12:41-44; Luke 18:9-14) Build yourself up in the Lord and build those around you... this is where God demands that you and I (all Christians) excel, all of the times! God Bless! Angel |
