NASB | 1 Timothy 5:3 ¶ Honor widows who are widows indeed; |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Timothy 5:3 ¶ Honor and help those widows who are truly widowed [alone, and without support]. |
Bible Question: Thanks. I guess what I'm really wanting to know is the background behind those Bible verses. From the verses I've read about widows in the Bible it seems to me that God was concerned that they be looked after and not taken advantage of. So my question is, why was that nessasary? What rights did they have. The verses suggest that they lost rights when their husbands died. Could they run a business, own property etc. |
Bible Answer: Hi Diomede, Yes you are right in your assumption that God was concerned about these widows being looked after. Also God wants no one to be taken advantage of, and much less does He want His people to take advantage of others Now. Was that necessary? We must analyze the cultural recognition that women typically beheld during that historical period. Women were most often treated as second class citizens as to the point of their word was no good in the court of law, without the testimony of two witnesses to reinforce it. This would have been a very difficult climate in which to succeed in a private business venture, much unlike the 'glass ceiling' that is being purported today. |
