NASB | 1 Timothy 5:20 Those who continue in sin, rebuke in the presence of all, so that the rest also will be fearful of sinning. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Timothy 5:20 As for those [elders] who continue in sin, reprimand them in the presence of all [the congregation], so that the rest will be warned. |
Bible Question: Wouldn't the instructions here concerning rebuke be directed to sinning elders or leaders in the church based on the previous verse 19 and the Chapter as a whole? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Bottomlines! I agree that the instructions concerning rebuke in 1 Tim. 5:20 are directed towards the sin of elders or leaders in the church. And I also agree that the preceding verses (17-19) completely support this viewpoint, since 17 introduces the concept of "double honor"; which would be only logical to conclude with a "double dishonor" or 'double rebuke' if their sin is found out.. Other Scriptures also support the fact that those in elected positions would be judged more harshly.. (2 Samuel 11, the verse where Jesus says, "to those who are given much, much will be required..", etc..) Blessings to you, Nolan |
