Subject: Women can indeed teach and preach |
Bible Note: Hello, From Paul’s other letters we can understand the context of his remarks. He does not contradict himself. Col 3:18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. Eph 5:22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 1Co 14:34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. 35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. The Greek word for wife is ‘gune.’ The Greek word for woman is ‘gune.’ Same word. So, we must look to the context to discern which meaning is intended. In each example above Paul is speaking of the husband/wife relationship. He is not speaking about the woman’s capacity to minister in public. We can see this from the numerous examples of women ministering in the New Testament. Phebe Rom. 16:1-2 Pricilla Acts 18:26, Rom. 16:3-5, 1 Cor. 16:19 Euodia and Syntyche Phil. 4:2-3 Junia Rom. 16:7 Women who pray and prophesy in church 1 Cor. 11:5 A woman evangelist Jn. 4:1-42 How the woman was created Gen. 1:26-28 Prophesy about women in the last days Acts 2:17-21 All are equal in Christ Gal. 3:28 All men are not in authority over all women. Christ is the head of the man and Christ is the head of the woman. In the order of the marriage covenant, the man is the head of the home, but spiritually the woman remains under the covering of Christ and submits to the husband ‘in the Lord.’ Wives are not to usurp authority over their husbands. But they certainly can and do minister effectively in the body of Christ. Blessings, Finder |
