NASB | 1 Thessalonians 5:23 ¶ Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Thessalonians 5:23 ¶ Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [that is, separate you from profane and vulgar things, make you pure and whole and undamaged--consecrated to Him--set apart for His purpose]; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete and [be found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
Bible Question:
Hi, Thess.5:23 "May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus" Is the spirit mentioned here the same as the Holy Spirit received by the believers? With love in Christ FytRobert |
Bible Answer: The terms "spirit" and "soul" in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 are used interchangeably, as they are throughout Scripture (cf. Hebrews 4:12) to refer to the immaterial part of man, and "body" to the material part. It is not a reference to the Holy Spirit. Paul does not teach a three- part composition of man but two, immaterial (spirit, soul) and material (body). See also 1 Cor. 3:1; Romans 8:10. --Hank |
