Bible Question: I came in here to find out if the word SABBATH or seventh day had a different meaning than an actual day. I have been going over and over this with my fiance. He believes that Saturday is the Sabbath and is very religious about it. I, on the other hand, believe that I LIVE IN the Sabbath rest in that my life belongs to Christ and I have entered into HIS REST EACH AND EVERY DAY. Is there a good verse to bring to the table with him on this issue. He keeps asking for bible verses. What you spoke already is VERY valuable to me. I believe also that after Christ we have entered into a new covenant where love is our greatest commandment. It supersedes all other laws. Any other wisdom on how to approach this in a way that someone with a good historical view of the bible would understand. He is very sharp--has read the Bible SO MANY TIMES--He spent years and years and years reading and re-reading the Bible. Many more times than I ever have, yet I feel he is missing the spirit of what the Bible speaks of in terms of what Christ did for us. We are set FREE from condemnation if we truly have accepted Christ to be our savior. Any suggestions? |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... Ex 16:26, 20:8; Lev 25:4; Heb 6:4; Act 20:7; Rom 7:14-8:1; 1Co 16:2; Gal 4:1-11; Col 2:1-23 ... ourfather'sheart, greetings, The Sabbath is a day, the seventh day of the week. "Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be none" (Exo 16:26). Exodus 20:8-10 (and other passages)says to keep it holy. There are some who say we need to keep the Sabbath and even keep it holy. Others say we should gather together on Sunday (Act 20:7; 1Co 16:2). Colossians 2:16 and Galatians 4:10 are also used in not keeping the Sabbath and other things. Read the context (Gal 4:1-11; Col 2:1-23). If you study the OT, you will see Israel didn't just gather on the Sabbath ... I believe it was even daily. They were to make the Sabbath a special and separate day. Today I see most Christians do not make any day holy. They treat Sunday like a holiday. It is tough to set aside a day - all for God, as a holy day. There are places around the world, where Christians (and others) can gather on Friday. Also, the Jewish day starts in the evening, so the Sabbath starts at 6pm ... some even say 6pm in Israel, no matter where you are in the world. Romans 8:1 says, "Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus". Again, we need to look at the context (Rom 7:14-25). It deals with the stuggle that we all have. Searcher |
