Subject: BradK, Are the other OT Laws in effect? |
Bible Note: But BradK, Are we free to ignore them? Or are we now set free to obey them? I believe the latter. You listed 7 points: 1.Christ came and fulfilled the law. (Matt.5:17) Yes! But while He did come to fulfill it, He also said that not one jot or tittle would pass away. Therefore the 10 commandments are not abrogated but the penalty of our breaking them has been paid by Christ on our behalf. It is still a sin to break the commands of God. 2. We are now the "Righteousness of God In Him" 2 Cor. 5:21. Also, "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes." Rom. 10:4 Our righteousness is an "imputed" righteousness which we recieve as believers "in Christ". This in no way relieves us of our obligation to strive to obey the commandments. "God forbid it." But the love of Christ constains us and we are servants of righteousness. 3. Understanding what we (as Gentiles) now have as Eph. 2:12-15 states,"12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, 15 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace" When taken in context, Paul is speaking of the ceromonial law. 4.Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law as Galatians 3:13-14 states. The curse was the penalty for breaking the law, not the law itself. Elsewhere, Paul says the Law is good. 5.The whole purpose of the "law" was to show us our sinfulness and lead us to Christ. (Rom 7:7, Gal. 3:19-24). That is the purpose then and now for the unconverted, but for christians it is rule for moral living. 6. We are released form the "law" as indicated in Rom. 7:4-6 We are released to do what? Serve in the newness of the spirit.(rom 7:6) 7. The law is fulfilled in us , "who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit ( Rom.8:3-4,9) Indeed. And praise be to Christ for fulfilling it on our behalf. But this verse does not say that we are free to ignore our duty as servants of the law. It may very well be that we are already in one accord regarding the Law and I am merely covering one aspect while you were focused on another. Nevertheless, perhaps someone else may benedit from our discourse. I know that I have. God Bless Brad, John |
