AMPLIFIED 2015 | Philippians 2:12 ¶ So then, my dear ones, just as you have always obeyed [my instructions with enthusiasm], not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation [that is, cultivate it, bring it to full effect, actively pursue spiritual maturity] with awe-inspired fear and trembling [using serious caution and critical self-evaluation to avoid anything that might offend God or discredit the name of Christ]. |
Subject: "Work out" is not "work for" |
Bible Note: An interesting study on this verse reveals that "work out" is not the same as "work for". The word translated work out (katergazomai) means to "achieve, accomplish, bring about, produce, cutivate [or] achieve" (BGD, p. 421)that is to develop. Paul was thus exhorting the Philippian believers to bring about or develop their own salvation by obedience to God, thus producing out of their freely received spiritual salvation that which is pleasing and glorifing to God. In context, Paul is calling these Philippians (Christians) We are to put our eternal salvation into practice, by producing "good works" not for salvation, but "out of" salvation. [See Eph.2:8-10] |
