AMPLIFIED 2015 | Philippians 2:10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW [in submission], of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, [Is 45:23] |
Bible Question:
In Philippians 2:10 we read: "that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, In heaven and on earth and under the earth," What is meant by under the earth? Who or what is under the earth? |
Bible Answer: These are the three relms of existance. Heavenly, earthly, subterraniam. The Greek word used for "under the earth" is "katachthonios" which translates subterranian. There are beings, things (by the way the word thing is italicized in my NASB bible which means it is included by the translators to make the translation smooth and is not in the manuscript) in the underworld. They bow at the name of Jesus. Think about the demons at Gergesenes. they knew Jesus and obeyed His command. My personal understanding of this verse is that it is for NOW. I know in my experience that The name of Jesus has the power to make people bow NOW. I have a hat that bears the name of Jesus Christ on it. I was wearing it when I went into a restraunt for lunch a man entered and read my hat and as he waited to be seated would not look at me except in glances as if the name would change on my hat. He by his behavior was bowing at the name of Jesus. He was acknowledging the Lordship and Authority of the King by his behavior. When the name of Jesus is used "things" wherever they may be must, should bow. Asis |
