NASB | Philippians 1:14 and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Philippians 1:14 Because of my chains [seeing that I am doing well and that God is accomplishing great things], most of the brothers have renewed confidence in the Lord, and have far more courage to speak the word of God [concerning salvation] without fear [of the consequences, seeing that God can work His good in all circumstances]. |
Bible Question: Why would the fact that that one of the greatest leaders of the early church (Paul) was in jail encourage other Christians to share their own faith with less fear? This seems to be the opposite effect from what I would expect. |
Bible Answer: Paul, as well as other believers, have less fear because we trust in our Lord. God is sovereign. He has promised, all who believe in Him, eternal life. Since we do not fear death, what else on this earth can we possibly fear. We know the Creator of the universe; what can man do to us? What's more, as Paul so eloquently wrote: Rom 8:35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Rom 8:36 Just as it is written, "FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE BEING PUT TO DEATH ALL DAY LONG; WE WERE CONSIDERED AS SHEEP TO BE SLAUGHTERED." Rom 8:37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. Rom 8:38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, Rom 8:39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. |
