Bible Question:
While the principle of each dying for their own sin is acknowledged in Deuteronomy 24:16, there seem to be cases where it was not put in practice. For example, the child born to David and Bathsheba died because of their sin (2Sa 12:14-18). And Saul's seven grandchildren were put to death because of Saul's sin (2Sa 21:5-9). How are we to reconcile these contradictory sets of facts? The Bible says the sins of the fathers have an ill effect on the children to the third and fourth generations (Exo 20:5; Deu 5:9). Is this a direct contradiction of Deuteronomy 24:16? Steve |
Bible Answer: Sin is not self contained. While each is held accountable for their own sin, the consequences of ones sins are not limited to the one who commits the sin. Adam and Eve sinned, all died. David sinned, the consequences of that sin tragicaly affected many beyond himself. The primary responsibility rests with the one who sins, but the consequences often cause loss to others. Ex 20:5 and Deu 5:9 in context is a contrast demonstrating God's nature. ...Visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the THIRD and FOURTH generations of those who hate Me, BUT showing lovingkindness( a covenant term) to THOUSANDS, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. It's purpose to demonstrate Who God is. That He limits the consequences of the fathers sins to the third and fourth generation, but shows lovingkindness( a covenant term)to THOUSANDS who love Him. It also shows what the consequences are of one's choice, whether to love the Lord or hate Him. |
