Bible Question: What does the verse in Deuteronomy mean about women wearing that which pertaineth to a man (sorry I have forgotten the verse. It is a controversial issue in my country. |
Bible Answer: I believe that Deuteronomy 22:5 is speaking about more than just the wearing of opposite gender garments. I believe it is also talking about gender roles in the marriage relationships. I think that we can agree on the fact that the Bible says that the man is to be the head of the household. The husband is to put a cloak of protection around his wife and family. It is an abomination to the Lord for a man not to step up and lead his family. This is where we get the expression about who "wears the pants in the family." The symbolism of a cloak as protection for the wife/family is also found in Malachi 2:16, "For I hate divorce," says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate a mans covering himself with violence as well as his garment," says the LORD Almighty." In a divorce situation, the man withdraws the cloak of protection that he vowed to keep over his wife. This is my interpretation of Deuteronomy 22:5. |
