Bible Note: I would just like to add to the note from the commentary in my Bible, "The Full Life Study Bible," KJV, for Ephesians 5:18: Ephesians 5:18: FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT. Be "filled" (present passive imperative) carries the meaning in Greek of "repeatedly being filled." The spiritual life of the child of God must experience constant renewal by repeatedly being filled with the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 3:14-19: "For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God." Ephesians 4:22-24: "That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;" Romans 12:2: "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." (1) The Christian is to be baptized in the Holy Spirit after conversion, (Acts 1:5: "For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence." and Acts 2:4: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.") yet he is to be filled with the Holy Spirit repeatedly for worship, service, and witness. (2) One experiences repeated fillings with the Holy Spirit by maintaining a living faith in Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:5: "He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law; or by the hearing of faith?"), being filled with God's Word (Colossians 3:16: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."), praying, giving thanks and singing to the Lord (Ephesians 5:19-20: "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;"; I Corinthians 14:15: "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also; I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also."), serving others (Ephesians 5:21: "Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God") and doing what the Holy Spirit desires (Ephesians 4:30: "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption"; Rom 8:1-14; Gal. 5:16; I Thes. 5:19) (3) Several results of being filled with the Holy Spirit are noted here (a) speaking with joy to God in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Ephesians 5:19), (b) giving thanks (Ephesians 5:20: "Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ", and (c) submitting to one another (Ephesians 5:21). Thank you. Janae |
